June Figsby

JUNE LILLIAN PATRICIA FIGSBY
December 9, 1929 – July 1, 2025
This ray of sunshine came into the world on December 9th, 1929 and sadly left us on July 1st, 2025. 95 years of life and most of it was outstanding.
June was born the precocious middle child to Charles Stuart and Nina Menzies and grew up in Winnipeg in a loving home with her older sister Rae and younger brother Chuck.
In March of 1946 June met the love of her life Henry Francis James Figsby or “Harry” to those who knew him. They were inseparable from then on.
In 1949 June caught a wedding bouquet and then in front of 4000 of the Roy Ward Dickson and his fun parade audience Harry won a diamond ring and got down on one knee and proposed even though they were so young. After 3 years of fun and adventures they tied the knot on Friday, June 13, 1952.There are well over 50 albums in June’s closet to attest to their travels and many lifetime friendships.
On September 30th, 1956 their daughter Joanne Lynne was born and two years later Michael Henry arrived on July 13th, 1958.
June was a stay at home mom and loved her children fiercely and it was a wonderful childhood for them both.
When school started June decided that she wanted more to do so went to work. Her picture still hangs in the neighbourhood pharmacy where she started her career which spanned many occupations from then on as she worked many jobs including school secretary at Voyager and records clerk for the Federal government. June made and kept friends from all her jobs and was usually the one to host any staff parties.
In 1985 June and Harry were overjoyed by the birth of their first grandchild, a girl, Jenna Leigh Basson and in 1988 a grandson, Joel Robert completed their happiness. Although distance separated them it never stopped them from being a huge part of their years growing up and they never missed an important event making memories to last a lifetime with them.
In 2000 mom lost her beloved Harry to cancer and although it left a huge hole she kept her zest for life strong. She continued to travel the world, build and maintain friendships and spend time with family. Everyone that met June wanted her as their mom, grandma, or friend.
June did have another passion in life and it was the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. She followed the team since the beginning and sold leaflets, held season tickets and attended many games in her lifetime as well as collecting memorabilia. She was the definition of TRUE BLUE.
A highlight of her later life besides her weekly “meat draws” was in 2019 when for her 90th birthday she attended the Grey Cup in Calgary. She became an overnight sensation and was on radio, in newspapers and even on television. Everyone took pictures with her. The Bombers didn’t let her down and brought home the cup after many years of drought.
June’s love of life and gentle loving nature won over many hearts so to say she will be remembered and missed seems an understatement.
Always in our hearts, rest easy now. We will see you in the sunshine as you brought warmth and love and happiness to all who knew you.
A celebration of June’s life will be held on Saturday August 9th at her home at 86 Belcourt Bay. It will be like her life, easy going and happy. Come by any time after 2:00p.m. but before 6:00p.m., unless you plan to watch the Bomber game with us.
June’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

A beautiful obituary for a beautiful person. It’s taken me a while to express my feelings for her on this site because it seemed there were not enough words to express how wonderful she was. I worked with June for many years in the Federal Government and her contribution to our department was extraordinary. I could not have had a more lovely relationship with her, both as co-worker and friend. She was so wise and I learned so much from her about life, love and relationships. I could always go to her with a problem or a fear, or when I simply needed some cheering up. She was able to provide advice that was so welcomed and she knew when I might need a little push or some words of encouragement.
Of course, it was sad to read of her passing, but I’m happy she was able to live such a long life, enjoying her friends, her family, her travel … and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. What a wonderful reunion it will be with Harry!

We met June and Harry many years ago when they came to The Northern Manitoba Trappers Festival to help their daughter Joanne who was very busy volunteering for the various events. They were such hard workers and over the years we came to know June as nothing short of being a "Ray of sunshine", a bundle of energy always ready with a smile and willing to lend a helping hand. She will be missed and forever loved. Rest in peace, dear, dear lady. Our deepest sympathy Joanne.

Joanne, I was so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing.
I remember her well on her many visits to Clearwater Lake. I particularly remember when we had a "Murder Party" at your Clearwater Lake home and your Dad was the butler and your Mom the waitress who served us food and drink all evening while we acted out our parts. It was such a grand happy time. She will be missed greatly.

What a wonderful tribute to an amazing lady, who will be greatly missed, I send my love and prayers to Mike, Joanne and Family.
Mike would often mention as of recent that he was to collect June from the meat raffle, I'm not sure if June ever won.
though. During video calls June on occasion would give a wave saying Hi, always smiling. I will raise a glass on the 9th from England. Fly high June.
Much Love

First of all , I offer my sincerest heartfelt condolences to her children, grandchildren and all those who loved her. Although our acquaintance was brief her impact was powerful, like her personality. She was the type of person who inspired you and left you feeling. " be more like June". It's always been said to leave this earth better than when you entered it. She did that and more, simply by looking at the family she left behind.

How can I be 'brief' to describe June? Because of June's daughter, Joanne I had the priviledge of meeting and getting to know June. June was the 'senior mom' I never had. As others have said, she was the sweetest and kindest of moms and everyone wanted her to be their mom. She was never overly judgemental, unless given a reason. If she did 'judje', she was also willing to forgive and forget. I am extremely humbled to have been a part of her life and her to be part of my life (thanks Joanne) and, as with everyone, I am going to miss her.. As a 'highlight' of the time knowing her, it would be, hands down, being her 'press agent' for the 2019 Grey Cup game. She was on CBC radio Canada, CBC radio Calgary, TSN radio live interview, CBC tv, CTV tv, Global TV and appeared in various newspapers. Any time the 2019 game would be brought up in conversation, her face would light up. Going to miss you, Winnipeg visits will never be the same.

- Oh June, we are sure gonna miss you! We have been friends since you moved in next door in 1965-such great fun neighbours for 3 years! Then when we moved to Brampton, we just kept going for another 58 years & managed to get together nearly every year after that. Thank you for your friendship, for all the laughs & wonderful memories, June. You were a very special friend & you lived an amazing life! Right now, I'd bet you & Harry are having a Bloody Caesar! I can just hear Harry say- Hey! How about that!
- Our condolences go to Joanne, Mike, Jenna & Joel & to her many friends. She was one super lady!

The memories are many. A seven hour drive with mom that felt like an hour. Great conversation and lots of laughter. Then there was this special request from her to go watch a movie of her choice. It was classic and hilarious. Those who know the story will get a kick out of this. I love her so much. Peace 😍🙏

June was much more than a friend. Derek introduced me to June saying that she was his second mom. June was a part of our family! From the moment we met when Derek and I became engaged, she opened her door, her home and her heart and made me feel welcomed and loved. We will never forget her kindness, her friendship, her wisdom, her laughter, her generosity, her beautiful soul. Earth's loss is definitely heavens gain! Until we meet again, you are forever loved June! The memories we share are cherished with so much gratitude xoxox

We were fortunate to meet Harry and June when they came to visit their wee granddaughter Jenna at Clearwater lake, and continued to visit each time they came. Armand and I always kept a "good" bottle of scotch for Harry and June thought that was so special. Although she was devastated by Harry's death, June kept his spirit alive through her travels and love of the Blue Bombers. My heart is with Joanne, Jenna, Joel and Michael at this very sad time, but remember whenever you feel the warmth of the sun shining on you, it is a hug and touch of love from your June. Fly with the Angels, June, spreading happiness and joy!

We first met June when she and Harry came north to The Pas to help during the Northern Manitoba Trappers' Festival when their daughter Joanne volunteered for one of the many Festival events. June and Harry pitched in with enthusiasm that year and several following years winning the hearts of all of us involved in making the Festival a success. May you rest in peace June. You were always a ray of sunshine. Our deepest sympathy is extended to you and your family Joanne with Blessings and Love.
