SINA HELEN FIKS

(née Grieger)

March 15, 1936 – March 25, 2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mom, grandma and great grandma, Sina Helen Fiks on March 25, 2026 at the age of 90.

Mom was born March 15, 1936, in Winnipeg to Rudolf and Mathilda Grieger. Mom was the second of three daughters, with an older sister, Elsie, and a younger sister, Naomi.

Mom grew up in Winnipeg and graduated from United College. She enjoyed school. Mom talked about how much she liked learning Latin, French, and math. She also enjoyed being outside. She loved gardening and especially all her flowers that she would have her yard filled with. While growing up she worked planting flowers in the cemetery across the road from where they lived where grandpa was caretaker of.

Baseball was something she really enjoyed playing. Whenever extended family got together and had a game of ball, she would be right in there playing too.

Football was another interest of hers. Before television—and before she was married—she would sit beside the radio, working on her needlepoint while listening to the game. In fact, Dad proposed to mom at a football game.

Mom and Dad got married June 28, 1958. Together they had 3 children: Murray, Sharon and Shelley. Mom and Dad only had 16 years together as Dad passed away August 1974 from cancer. Mom was then a young widow having to raise 3 kids on her own, this was not easy for her at all. She worked hard and long hours at the Bank of Montreal where she had been for many years. Thankfully, she had some help from Grandma and Grandpa who lived next door to us.

After the bank, mom worked at the Holiday Inn until her retirement, a job she truly enjoyed.

While growing up, mom had accepted Jesus as her Lord and Saviour and attended Elmwood Mennonite Brethren Church and then later, McDermott Avenue Baptist Church. In the last few years, she attended Oak Bank Baptist Church when she was able to.

Mom's relationship with Jesus was very important to her. She faithfully served in many ways - singing in the church choir, teaching Sunday school, and leading the women's ministry, Kings Daughters. She always made sure we went to church, Sunday school, girls and boy’s clubs and youth group.

Mom’s children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were her pride and joy. She prayed for each and everyone daily.

Mom is survived by her 3 children: Murray (Wanda), Sharon (Darcy), Shelley (Lance).

Her grandchildren: Brandee, Mitch, Leighton, Kylie (Brandon), Zac (Erica), Daniel, Taran and Justin.

Great grandchildren: Ainzlee, Ace, Hallie and Tucker.

Also survived by her sister Naomi (Walter) Dueck, brother-in-law John Regehr and sister-in-law Hilda Fiks.

She was predeceased by Dad, Wilfred Fiks; parents, Rudolf and Mathilda Grieger; parents in law Helen and Konrad Fiks; sister Elsie Regehr, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, niece, and nephew.

Mom, you will be missed dearly but we rejoice that you are in heaven with Jesus and reunited with all the loved ones that went before you.

Till we meet again.

Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at The Church at Pine Ridge - 65152 PR 207 Sunnyside, MB. For those unable to attend, a livestream of the service will be available at a later date.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Heart Stroke Foundation of Manitoba and CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.

I was very sorry to hear of her passing. What began as family became something much more over the years, she was someone I truly cared for, worked with, and considered a dear friend.

I will always appreciate our monthly chats with her and Brayden. I truly looked forward to those moments, hearing her updates, the joy in her voice, and the way she spoke so lovingly about her children, and especially her grandchildren, sharing stories about each of them one by one. You could feel how proud she was.

And boy, could she entertain. Endless food, laughter, and fellowship. Her home, and her heart were always open. She had a special way of making you feel welcome, valued, and connected, and that is something I will never forget.

I see traces of her in her children, from her smile to her mischievous ways, and her kindness, and I know that part of her will live on through them.

She touched more people than she likely ever realized. I will miss her dearly.

My father Bob Gust and his brothers had a special place in their heart for the the "Winnipeg Grieger's" and their 3 "cousins", one of whom was your mother Zina.

Mrs. Fiks was a special role model for many young women, myself included. She was gentle, wise and kind. Sending love to the entire family and praying God's comfort rest upon you. Heaven has gained a beautiful treasure.
