RICHARD BERNARD PHILIP FLETCHER

March 22, 1950 – September 20, 2021

With extremely heavy hearts, that we announce the passing of our dearest father, husband, papa, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend, Richard Benard Philip Fletcher on September 20th 2021, following a brief but hard battle with cancer.

Richard passed away at Oakview Care Home with his family holding him at the age of 71; sadly just 9 months and 3 days after his beloved wife, Sharon.

Rick will be lovingly remembered and forever missed by his daughters, Jennifer (Jeff) and Amy (Udo); his Grandchildren, Julian, Brittney, Nicolas, Katja and Emma; his brothers, Bob (Brenda), Bert (Leslie), Pat, Jack (Mary) and Don; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and friends.  Rick was predeceased by his wife, Sharon, sister-in-law Donna and parents, Robert and Thelma Fletcher.

Rick was born in Winnipeg on March 22nd, 1950 and was the 4th son of 6 born to Robert and Thelma Fletcher.  He resided with his family in the North End of Winnipeg where he attended Sisler High School and afterwards married his high school sweetheart on September 16th, 1972.  Rick and Sharon moved to Transcona together and built a life there with their children, Jenny and Amy.

Rick had many hobbies and interests.  His biggest interest started as a teenager when his brother Pat used to write sick notes for him so they could go to the junkyard and get car parts.  Starting with this, Rick enjoyed a lifelong hobby of restoring classic cars, cruise nights and car shows.  He gained a lot of knowledge about cars and in addition to this he was a true “Jack of all trades” (as Jeff likes to call him the “Rick of all trades”) Rick could do anything, whether it is building a house to sewing his daughters dance costumes.  He knew how to do a bit of everything and used his knowledge to help others.  His daughters especially adored him for this.

Rick will be remembered by all for his kind and gentle nature. He was generous with his time and help without any hesitation. He was highly engaged in all of his daughters and granddaughters activities and never missed a single soccer game, baseball game or dance recital.  He led with patience and understanding and always made time for those who needed him.   Jenny and Amy feel very lucky to have had a patient father who was always there to teach and support them.  Years later, he developed a special relationship with his son-in-law, Jeff.  Rick was not only a friend but a mentor to the “son he never had”.

A special heartfelt thank you to Uncle Jack for all of the countless hours he spent "having tea" with dad during the last 6 months.  We know that these visits made Dad feel incredibly happy and cared for.  We are forever grateful for your outpour of love and protectiveness that you have shown him.

Even though Rick left us too soon, we feel peace in our hearts that he is no longer suffering from heartbreak or illness and is with the love of his life, Sharon in heaven.

“Goodnight sweetheart well it’s time to go..”  We adore you and you are so deeply missed, Dad.  Until we meet again.

I live on

Whenever you are missing me

Look up to Heaven’s skies.

I’m the twinkle in the stars.

I’m the sunset and sunrise.

I’m the raindrop and a rainbow.

I’m the ocean’s waves of blue.

So everywhere you go, you’ll know

I live on, loving you.

In keeping Rick and Sharon’s wishes, a small family service for both of them has been held.  The family would greatly appreciate if you take a few moments to share your favourite memories of Rick with us on this page.

Sincerest sympathies to Jenny, Amy and all of your family and friends that were closed to Rick.   I was close to Jenny for some time in High School and knew Rick and Sharon as nothing but the most caring and loving parents.  They were the very best kind of people.   I hope they are holding hands in Heaven.   Love and Hugs to all those grieving this great loss.   Christine Fast

I too worked with Rick out of Station D and then later worked together on nights. If it wasn’t for Rick I couldn’t have done some of the computer work. Our deepest sympathies to Jenny and Amy…family was so precious to Rick.
