ROGER MARCEL FONTAINE

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 64 years Patricia; son Mark (Shenan); daughter Cathy (Ryan); grandsons, Taylor and Teagan; as well as granddaughter Melissa, who is in heaven waiting for him to join her.

Roger was a kind, gentle and soft-spoken man. He led by example and was more inclined to action than talk.

He was inquisitive and industrious. During his early teens, he had several newspaper routes throughout St. Boniface, as well as subcontracted several more routes to other newspaper deliverers. Meanwhile, he was also employed restocking soda vending machines in office buildings throughout downtown Winnipeg.

Roger loved to travel and explore. Every summer there were epic weekend family camping trips around southern Manitoba and North-Western Ontario featuring hiking, fishing, canoeing and raging bonfires.

Roger was a man of many talents, mostly self-taught. He was our Mr. Fix-it. Whether is was building a rec-room, carpentry, electrical, plumbing or mechanical, he always had a project on the go. Each weekend for many years he would drive across the city to do repairs, maintenance and chores for his widowed and aging mother so that she could continue living in her own home. Often, he would offer his help to friends and neighbours with their projects as well.

He was always encouraging us to pursue our activities, passions and dreams. Never did we hear a complaint from him even when he had to awake before 6a.m. on his day off to carpool a group of teammates to a game.

He remained active and healthy in his later years. Simple camping evolved into RVing across Canada and the USA. Mom and Dad became snowbirds and wintered in Tucson Arizona for many years where they made many new and very dear friends. Roger participated in a variety of activities including cards, ringers, darts, RV baseball and pool. He would cycle and walk the river path daily. He also volunteered cooking at the weekly BBQ, served pancakes at breakfast and scooped ice cream at socials.
