ELIZABETH JANE FREDERICKSON

With heavy hearts, we announce that Liz passed away on Friday, February 3, 2023 at the Grace Hospital after a very short illness. She had just celebrated her 94th birthday the previous week.  

She was predeceased by her husband, Paul Frederickson; parents, Campbell and Janet Millar of Portage la Prairie; and brothers, Jack and Cam.
 
Liz is survived by her children, Paul Jr., Janice Thomson (Alan) and Diane Eyford (Bruce); and her six grandchildren, Jake Thomson (Yasmin), Rory Thomson (Marta), Glynnis Eyford (David), Abigail Eyford, Millar Lecher (Josh), and Charlie Frederickson. Her first great grandson Marcos Thomson Merino arrived January 20th in Madrid Spain. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Doreen Rouse; and her six Millar nieces and nephews.

Liz spent her early years in Portage la Prairie, moving to Wpg in her teens. She attended Kelvin High School where she participated in all things musical. She loved the choir and glee clubs of both Kelvin and Fort Rouge United Church. She worked for Air Canada until she married. Typical of the time, she was unable to continue her job due to her new marital status!

She married Paul Frederickson in 1953 and was very much a supportive wife -  of both his career and social activities. Homemaking and raising a family became her career. She raised three kids, and with her loud, powerful voice, a strong sense of humour, and a healthy dose of 60's benign neglect, she made quite an impression on our relatives, friends and neighbours! 

Liz was a great hostess; Christmas, New Year’s Day, Grey Cup, Sunday dinners and parties were her favourite times to cook.  She read lots, was a fabulous knitter, loved crosswords and puzzles, and was news junkie and an avid sports fan.  Curling, figure skating and tennis were some of her favourites; other than the Blue Bombers as both her husband Paul and brother Cam played for the team from 1946-49.

Volunteer work over the years included the Calgary Children's Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, political campaigning in St James Assiniboia for the Liberals both provincially and federally and many years on the Grace Hospital Board. She loved her numerous Ladies Bridge Groups and maintained lifelong friends because of it.

Liz was a progressive thinker with her own ideas and opinions and was never afraid to express them. We often wondered if perhaps Norman Lear had met our mother first he created ‘Maude’ as the two were very much cut from the same cloth!

In accordance with her wishes, no formal service will be held. Her family and friends will gather at a later date to raise a glass in toast to Liz!
