JANET FREELAND

August 30, 1968 – January 1, 2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Janet on January 1st, 2026.

Janet was predeceased by her beloved father, Stuart; niece, Kera; and aunts, Vera and Marj. Left to mourn her loss are her mother, Lilian; brothers, Ian (Denise) and Andrew; and her sister, Heather. Janet was a beloved aunt to Mystery (Jake) and Terry, and a great-auntie to Bizhiw, Havanna, and Eva. Janet also leaves behind her uncle, Jim; her best friend, Colleen; and many other family and friends.

Janet was born in Liverpool, England, in 1968 and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1975. Janet attended Silver Heights Collegiate, graduating in 1987. Shortly after graduation, Janet went to work at Zellers Polo Park, where she worked until 1994, before moving to Parksville, BC, and continuing to work for Zellers in Nanaimo, BC. In 1996, Janet returned to Winnipeg to help her sister raise Mystery. Janet loved Mystery and was more like a second mum than an auntie. Janet embarked on her nursing career in 2001 and was a CRN for the Health Sciences Centre ED at the time of her passing.

Janet loved to make people laugh and was happiest when spending time with friends and family. She had a great appreciation for nature and was always fascinated by any kind of animal—there was never a cat or dog anywhere that Janet couldn’t resist stopping to say hello to. Janet loved to travel and had plans for more travelling once she retired. Janet was always ready with a helping hand and a shoulder to cry on. Helping people was her passion, and Janet touched so many lives with her care and compassion.

A celebration of life will be held from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Monday, March 16th, 2026, at the Unitarian Facility at 603 Wellington Crescent @Academy.

I've never seen anyone work so tenaciously to recover in order to return to their career. She loved Nursing passionately and it was from sheer will and determination that she was able to return, albeit for too short a time. Her wealth of knowledge, genuine smile, and calm demeanor will be missed in Emerg. My sincere condolences to Heather and her entire family, she spoke of you often and I'm sure was not ready to leave you yet.
