WERNER JOHN FRERS
December 15, 1931 – February 2, 2025
Werner John Frers passed away and went to be with his Lord on February 2nd 2025, while under care at Grace Hospice in Winnipeg. He was 93 years old.
Werner was born in Russell, Manitoba to Willam and Emily Frers on December 15, 1931, and was the second of 12 children. He met, then married, Audrey (Kort) in Winnipeg in June of 1960. They were married for 64 years until her death in August of 2024.
Werner was a devoted husband and father. He always put the needs of his family before his own. He was also a man of strong faith and lived out that faith daily by loving God and loving others. He served as a moral compass for his family and did his best to lead by example.
Werner demonstrated his love for others by serving at his local church. He had a fervent passion for the very young and the very old. He volunteered, taking care of the young children at church, giving mothers a break during their “Ladies Time Out” group, where he was affectionately called “Grandpa” by the little ones. He also supported Child Care International since 2002, sponsoring many girls overseas, ensuring they got an education. He chose girls because he felt they were the most vulnerable and overlooked.
His love for the elderly was evident as he faithfully served at Meadowood Manor Nursing Home for over 30 years where he tirelessly served as a board member and volunteer, ensuring that each resident that wanted to attend church on Sunday made it there. He also participated in the Chapel services.
After his retirement, Werner enjoyed playing golf and being with friends on the course, at which time he was fortunate enough to score 3 hole in ones. He was a very social and friendly person and never met a stranger.
Werner is predeceased by his wife Audrey (Kort), his brothers Herman, John and Bill, and sister Marianne (Vust). He is survived by his daughters Melinda (Sonnenberg) and Joanne (Zada), grandchildren Haylee, Connor, Ceren, Adem and Jon, and siblings Herbert, Eleanor (Toews), Marge (Hammond), George, Kurt, Norman and Ernest.
He was loved and admired by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.
Werner’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Sincere sympathy on the passing of your father, Melinda and Joanne.
While we rejoice with your dad, that he is now in the presence of Jesus, we sympathize with you girls, as you grieve your deep loss.
May it be of great comfort to you that your father and mother are together again, and enjoying their eternal home.
Your parents were hospitable, opening up their home to us many Friday nights in our earlier years of marriage! Their joy was evident in their infectious laughters !
May your memories of happy family times over the years bring you a measure of comfort! Lovingly, Uncle Kurt & Auntie Marg 💕

My deepest sympathy on the loss of your father.
i remember his devotion looking after his aging mother and his commitment to baby sitting at Ladies Time Out and the many years volunteering at Meadowood. He used his gifts in ministry in many ways with a smile and faithful devotion. A life well lived.

I had no idea Werner was involved in so many volunteer and support services, although it doesn't surprise me. That's the kind of giving person he was.
I have so many fond memories of earlier years, as I spent a lot of time with his family, memories of our badminton games at Assiniboine Park or just hanging out in back yard.
When my mom babysat Melinda and Joanne, Werner would pick her up every morning and drive her home every night, never complaining of the long drive.
I remember his devotion to his mom while she resided at Meadowood Manor, visiting her on a daily basis.
He did love his golf, getting out as often as he could. I didn't know of his 3 holes in one. Wow!
He was such a big comfort to Audrey while she was at Deer Lodge, constantly by her side.
To sum it up, Werner was a good man of strong faith. Enjoy your reunion with your loved ones Werner.
Melinda and Joanne - you are always in my thoughts.

Mr. Frers and his family faithfully took me to Sunday school at Whyte Ridge Baptist Church every Sunday from the age of 5 until I was in my late teens and began working. I remember him as a kind man with a jolly laugh. I can see him smiling and laughing in my memory. I had a very special friendship with his daughter Melinda and have warm memories of that time of my life. I am thankful that Mr Frers' family took such an interest in my life and in ensuring that I had the opportunity to get to know God. Rest well Mr. Frers. How lovely to reach 93. Take care Melinda and Joanne.
