KENNETH “KEN” FRIESS

July 26, 1958 – December 29, 2024

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ken Friess on December 29th, 2024. Ken's quick wit, humour, and zest for life impacted everyone who knew him. Whether making sharp comments, cracking a joke at the least expected moment, or sharing his unfiltered thoughts, Ken’s humour was a gift that never failed to entertain.

Ken leaves behind his beloved wife Joan Friess; his daughters, Jennifer Schappert (Kyle) and Kristen Friess (Gillian); and his precious twin grandbabies, Saoirse and Sawyer. The twins had a special piece in his heart, and he was a highly involved Grampy.

Born in Edmonton and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Ken is predeceased by his parents, Dee and Len Friess; in-laws, Marg Firby (Gord); great-uncle Robert Friess; and infant sister Valerie. He is survived by his siblings, Joan Wood (Glen), Peggy Miller (Marvin), John Friess (Caroline), Jim Friess (Sherry); in-laws, Anne Hall (Brian), Jim Firby (Bonita), Dave Firby (Joan), and Patti Russell (Dave); and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Ken spent his childhood playing with friends in the streets of St. James and eventually had many summers at the family island on Lake of the Woods. He built a successful career in Sales in the Plumbing and Heating industry. Ken always knew how to make a sale, a connection, or a joke that would make you forget you were there to talk business.

Ken met Joan when he was just 20 years old, and over the next 46 years, the two created a life rich in love and laughter. Together, they raised their daughters in Charleswood, where Ken was a devoted, caring father, and supportive husband. His family was his world, and he was the glue that kept them all together. The Friess home was known for its warmth, laughter, and the unmistakable sound of Ken’s voice telling stories – or, more often than not, jokes.

Ken had a passion for aviation, from his love of flight simulators and airshows to listening to stories from his nephew Jamie, a pilot. His interest in planes was matched only by his talent for cartooning. Although his cartoons were often politically incorrect, they always drew laughter from anyone fortunate enough to see them.

Music was another constant in Ken's life. Whether singing along to 40s tunes or attending concerts, Ken's joy for music was contagious, and he loved sharing tunes with loved ones. He was also a major history buff and loved all things JFK, and WW2.

Throughout the years Ken and Joan spent time in Maui, Granite Lake, and eventually their retirement home in Mesa, Arizona. There, they continued building memories, making lifelong friends, and enjoying each moment to the fullest.

Ken battled Pulmonary Fibrosis from 2020 until his passing, but throughout his illness, his humor and love for his family never wavered. His grandbabies were a constant source of joy and motivation for him to keep fighting. Although he was approved for a double lung transplant, the call never came. The family is grateful to the transplant team and the healthcare staff at HSC unit GH6 for their care and compassion. In his memory, we encourage everyone to sign up to be an organ donor.

Ken will be remembered as a man who lived life with humor, generosity, and an open heart. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in his family and all who were lucky enough to know him.

A celebration of Ken’s life will be held at 1:00pm on Sunday, January 5th, at The Winnipeg Winter Club located at 200 River Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.

Rest in peace Ken.

The world is a little less funny without you,

but we will keep laughing in your honour.

Ken’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I was first introduced to " Mr. Friess" as Kristen's friend Breanne many years ago. Not long after that he was asking Kristen where her friend " Little Leanne" had been, and my nickname was born. Even back then he always made me feel like part of the family. The last time I had a visit back in the Friess home it truly did feel like old times and I remember just laughing. I will be forever grateful for the unconditional guidance and support I was given throughout the years and to always to have felt like part of the family.

prayers being sent out to Ken's amazing family and Kindred family. Ken was one of the greatest rep's I had ever had while working in WPG in the 90's. Our industry has lost a great human with a fantastic laugh and amazing spirit.

We have so many memories of Ken - all of them good ones ! For Don, working at Marshall Wells in Regina in the early 1980's, Ken was a phone contact in Winnipeg. When Ken changed jobs and began traveling they met in person and became fast friends. Whenever Ken was heading West, a stopover in Regina meant cheeseburger pie at the Ziffles, an evening of ' adult beverages' , and often some bad singing and even worse piano playing....it always included a discussion of the latest gadget for sale on the shopping channel. Ken's return trip home often found us at whatever hotel he was staying at for a pizza and pool night...our 2 boys, now grown men, have fond memories of those visits. Shannon's mom, ' Grandma Rita', had a soft spot for Ken and often, with very little notice, would bake a 4 liter ice cream pail of jam-jam cookies for Ken to take back to Winnipeg....Ken once confessed to us they sometimes didn't make it all the way there!

Our summer vacations spent at a family cottage in Gull Lake, Manitoba often found Ken and Joan joining us for a beach day, a bbq or the annual theme night. We are blessed to have had a 40+ year friendship, our deepest, heartfelt condolences go to Joan, Jen, Kristen and all of Ken's family. Rest in peace Ken.

Ken and I started working together at Kindred in 1996 when I joined the organization, and we worked together either directly or indirectly for over 20 years. Ken's infectious personality could draw people in like no other, and to say that he was a legend at Kindred would be an extreme understatement. I particularly will always cherish the memories of Ken holding court at the bar during the evening hours of our National Sales Conferences. His humour brought a smile to everyone's faces, and we could often be seen holding our sides as our bellies hurt from all the laughing. Although he certainly took his job and career very seriously, he also had an uncanny ability to find the humour in any situation.

My heart goes out to Joan, Jennifer, Kristen, and all of Ken's family and friends. The world lost a great man this week, and Ken will be missed by so many!

When a friendship goes back to the best part of 40 years, the sadness that follows goes without saying. Like many of you, I will always remember Ken’s great sense of humour. Whether it was the Franklin Expedition, German cakes, sideburns, or the size of people’s heads, there was always something that would keep me entertained and laughing. So many happy times Joan, going back to the days when Wruffles was your only dependant, to our last catch up at Victoria Beach - precious memories I’ll keep forever. Joan, sending much love to you and your family.

I had known Ken for roughly 18 years, as the goofy, caring Dad of my best friend. Ken was always so welcoming. He always took time to sit and learn more about myself and was always good to bounce ideas off of. Him and Kristen would tease each other, ending in lots of laughs and entertainment. Both Ken and Joan graciously took me and my partner in for a month as we unexpectedly came back to Winnipeg after an illness during our year long backpacking trip, when we had no set address yet. I will never forget this kindness and also just having the quality time with them. He really was family.

Will be deeply missed.

I met Ken throught the wholesale plumbing industry a couple of decades ago and as noted, you wouldn't know we were talking business. Calm, laid back, easy to talk to and would get you out of a jam. Always called me by my nickname, that ony a few would even care to remember, but Ken did. Truly a fine gentleman. Will be missed.
