DONALD “DON” PETER FROESE

October 25, 1964 – September 04, 2021

With heavy hearts we announce that Don Froese passed away suddenly on Saturday, September 04, 2021 at his home in Winnipeg, Manitoba

How do you sum up a life?

We share our memories and reflect on how Don touched our lives in his special way.

A husband, life partner, son, brother, uncle, mentor, co-worker and friend to many, Don was true to himself and courageously shared who he was with the world.

A life partner and husband to John Cardinal for almost 30 years, together, they built a life they loved.

The only son of Peter and Alice, Don strove to live a life of honesty and integrity with a deep love for his mom and dad.

A brother to Colleen, Janice and Rachel his love for his siblings was strong and true.

Uncle to Nicole, Brienna, Bethany and Lauren he loved his nieces so much. Great Uncle to Wyatt, Lorenzo, Javier, Althea and Trace, Don loved his expanding family. Christmas was a special time for the Froese family as they celebrated many family dinners together over the years.

A friend to so many, Don loved sharing tickets to hockey games to cheer on his Jets, “stay in your **** net!” or Bomber games or relaxing at Club 200 playing VLTs and buying, “a round for the house!” when winnings were good. Don was a friendly adversary when needed, an intent listener often, an ally and a respected community member who was always learning and challenging himself. He loved to organize and host fundraising game shows for a variety of charities and was a natural emcee.

Don was very proud of his service in the Canadian Navy aboard the HMCS Provider and was deeply moved by his experience of rescuing 90 Vietnamese refugees at sea.

Don worked his whole life including retail and customer service but found his true calling as a purchasing and materials manager. He loved his work both at LaFarge Concrete and lastly at Amsted Rail/Griffin Wheel Winnipeg which became family to him. He was always willing to take a call and problem solve.

A private and gentle side of Don is revealed in his poetry and beautiful calligraphy as well as his love of Johnny Cash and classical music.

From John, “Don, my husband and life partner of almost 30 years, I miss you every day and cherish the time we had together. Thank you for all your love. I will pay it forward in memory of you. Till we meet again sweetie.”

A Celebration of Don’s Life will be held on Sunday, October 17, 2021 at 1 pm at Club 200, 190 Garry Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba
