ERNEST HARRY MARK FUHR

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ernest Harry Mark Fuhr on April 16, 2023 at the age of 86. He was survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Ethel Fuhr; his sons, Mark (Karen) and Kirk (Mary); his grandson Adam (Bryce); his brother Norman (Alice); and many members of extended family. He was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Dorothy Fuhr; and his brother David.

Ernie was a railroad worker, a family man, a guitar player, a crokinole master and a fixer of everything. Born in Ochre River, he lived his life with a clarity and providence that was grounded in his faith and love of his family. He met his wife Ethel on a bus on Dec 26, 1961, and a few months later started his life’s greatest journey, as a husband and then as a father. He took great pride in his work as a signal maintainer for CN, a job which he had for nearly 40 years; CN relocated the family to many small towns throughout Manitoba, Ontario, and Saskatchewan, and they eventually settled in Swan River Manitoba in 1974. Throughout his life he volunteered with church and community organizations and gained a reputation as a kind and loving person and a good friend, who always had ideas of how things could be made to be better.

After his retirement and the birth of their grandson Adam, Ernie and Ethel moved to Winnipeg to be closer to the action. In his retirement years, he enjoyed travelling with Ethel in their motorhome, learning how to work new gadgets, fixing things around the home, tinkering with inventions, playing the guitar, and spending more time volunteering.

He possessed a thriftiness and a fix-it-myself attitude which never failed to impress and will be greatly missed. It wasn’t always about saving money — it was the principal of the matter, that if something could be done within the family, it should at least be attempted (just last year, he told us of how he had mastered the refilling and repressurizing of aerosol WD-40 cans — we were worried he was accidentally going to blow up the garage).

As per his wishes, no funeral will be held (his one last thrifty trick). Donations in his name can be made to a charity of your choice.

We would like to thank the paramedics, doctors, and nurses at Grace Hospital (with a very special thanks to Holly) that provided him caring and support in his final days.

We will miss you always.
