DANIEL GEORGE FUKUMURA

April, 18 1962 – June, 7 2022

Daniel passed away at the Health Sciences Centre on June 7, 2022 at the age of 60, after a lengthy illness, awaiting a lung transplant.

Left to cherish his memory are his siblings Debby aka ‘Dobby’ (Gilles), Roberta (Mark), Theresa (Albert), Sheila (Gord), Michael (Lesley) and Linda (Darren), many nephews and nieces, and extended family. Daniel was predeceased by his parents, Rita and George.

Daniel worked for many years as a job coach for a non-profit organization, working with people with intellectual disabilities, supporting their work and participation in the community.

Dan had many interests but one of his greatest passions was the rock band KISS. He was an extreme fan and devoted member of the KISS Army, amassing an impressive collection of memorabilia.

Dan took every chance he got to see his favourite band in concert, often attending dressed in full KISS costume that rivaled the real thing.

He loved cheering on the Winnipeg Jets and the Blue Bombers and had an incredible memory; he knew every player, the teams’ strengths and weaknesses and could strategize and call plays as if he were behind the bench. He would spend many hours discussing sports, cars and motorcycles with his brothers-in-law, amazing them with his knowledge and fun facts on every topic.

His sense of humour was second to none and he could make everyone around him laugh hysterically with his quick wit and astute observations. Dan had a caring heart and a generous nature; he loved cooking, especially burgers and sharing his creations with his family. He was a movie buff, always able to quote any line from any movie or make a recommendation for a great a movie to view.

He had a close relationship with his nephews and nieces and enjoyed spending time with them. Dan would take them to sporting events and monster truck rallies which included spoiling them with ice cream and treats; he was a great uncle. Dan was looking forward to getting to know his new great-nephews and great-nieces and becoming the greatest great uncle.

Of all the relationships in Dan’s life, none was as significant as the one with his six siblings…little brother to three; big brother to three.  We were a tight knit bunch, growing up in a close, loving household, we knew each other’s quirks, many inside jokes and pet peeves. Being the first boy born after three girls, Daniel stood out. Charismatic and handsome Dan was a brother to be proud of, always feeling safe when around him because we knew he had our back. As adults we grew closer and even though things were not always smooth sailing, the love Dan had for us was unwavering and he made sure we all knew how much he loved us and how important we were to him. We loved Daniel immensely and are going to miss him forever; we take great comfort in knowing he is with our parents now, no longer in pain and breathing easy.

We would like to thank Dr. David Christiansen and all the staff on GH6 for the excellent care and compassion they provided.

As per Daniel’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will be held.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to your favourite charity in Dan’s memory.

David Zebinski was a big fan of Dan’s. My son has an intellectual disability who worked with Dan for about 7 years. He enjoyed  the conversations , laughing about movies and talking about sports. When a memory  came back in conversation about the jokes Dan said between him and his fellow clients, David has a big smile on his face . Thank-you Dan . Rest In Peace.

I was talking to someone from the work site where I met Dan back in the 90s.  I am absolutely stunned to hear of Dan's passing.  I used to chat with him at work, until 2017, when my work location was changed.  I had an immediate connection with him because I had also worked in the same office as his Dad George in the 80s. I heard so many stories about family and his KISS adventures over those 20+ years.  Definitely gone too soon.  My condolences to all of his family.
