Sergio Gatta

Obituary Photo

SERGIO FEDERICO MICHELE GATTA

July 30, 1946 – September 28, 2026

Our hearts are broken in announcing the sudden passing of Sergio (Fred) Gatta on September 28, 2026.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 45 years, Kris; sons, Mike (Stephanie), Josh, Jamie (Ashley); grandchildren, Amica (Kyle), Ramona, Jace; and brother John (Janet). Also missing him will be his sister and brother-in-law Carol and Greg Blackwell, brother-in-law John Fikkan (Daniel); nieces and nephews, Kris (Scott), Janna, Cam, Lauren (Shaun), Jon (Dominique), and their families.

Sergio left his birthplace of Villalago, Italy and arrived at Ellis Island in 1952. The family made its way to Winnipeg and first settled in the Elmwood area.

After a few schoolyard dustups having to do with his recent arrival, lack of English, and an Italian name, he began using the anglicised version of his name, Fred. That name carried him through his school years and his professional life until he met his future wife who immediately told him he didn’t look like a Fred, but rather a Sergio. Thus, after that, friends referred to him by either name.

At his high school, Daniel Mac, Sergio was involved with the Social Committee, helping to plan activities for the three years he attended. He also played guitar at school with a group of guys included Kurt Winters and Fred Turner.

Sergio then went off to university to eventually become a Language Arts teacher. He spent his career teaching with the St. James School Division, starting at Golden Gate Junior High, then Brooklands, and eventually retiring from Westwood Collegiate. After that he spent a couple of years as a Facility Advisor for student teachers from the U of M.

He loved teaching and students loved him. Many have recalled stories of Language Arts being taught by way of his History of Rock and Roll class. String Art also worked its way into an offered Activity. He spent many years coaching school volleyball teams as well. Of course there was also the impression he left with students and staff sitting in his beloved 1969 GTO convertible.

Somewhere in there he managed to marry and have three sons, and grands, his pride and joy. We’d say a wonderful life by any standard of measurement. He will be deeply missed.

Our family would like to thank the staff at Grace Hospital Emergency Department for their care and compassion.

A Celebration of Life will be held November 14, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. at Sturgeon Heights Community Club, 210 Rita Street, Winnipeg. It will be casual, as was Sergio’s style.

I had Mr. Gatta at Golden Gate for Language Arts way back in 1969. Yes, he had the coolest way of teaching with rock and roll lyrics. I would sometimes catch a ride to school in his Ford Pinto.

My condolences to the family...

Mike Gatta was one of the coolest teachers I had at any time in school. I was a student of his at Golden Gate Junior High School, and after barely getting through junior high and high school, I went on to have a career as a professional wrestler. He came to see me wrestle at the Winnipeg Arena and I was so proud to be able to perform for him and many of my other teachers.

To tell you what kind of a mark he left on me in my life, I took his history of rock and roll when I was in junior high. After I retired from wrestling, I went into journalism, and eventually worked for the Billboard magazine group out of New York City, where I covered acts like the Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead (and all because of the interest I got from that junior high class at Golden Gate).

Many great memories and a huge thank-you to just one life he touched.

While waiting in the staff lounge for my dad to finish teaching each afternoon, Fred was always someone who stood out—not just for being the most stylish teacher there, but for his genuine kindness and hip spirit. Thinking of his family and remembering him fondly.

Sergio was the source of many interesting ideas and adventures starting in our early teaching careers from the 1960s at Golden Gate through to the late 1990s at Westwood Collegiate. He could always be depended on to solve the many problems I had over the years with those darn computers. So many laughs and good times. A good friend.
