DOREEN ALICE GILROY

(née Hannibal)

March 3, 1950 - June 17, 2025

Doreen Alice Gilroy (née Hannibal), 75 years old, passed away peacefully with family by her side on June 17th, 2025, after battling Alzheimer’s Disease for 10 years. A proud wife, mother, grandmother, nurse, gardener, curler, and so much more, she will be remembered for these things and so much more.

Doreen was born on March 3rd, 1950 in High Prairie, Alberta to Eric and Christina (Thomson) Hannibal and was the fourth of seven children. Doreen was raised in Ochre River, Manitoba, along with her siblings, James Hannibal (Emma), Bruce Hannibal (Laurie), Gordon Hannibal (Jackie), Midge Sametz (Les), Phyllis Snow (Jack), and Wendy Weisshaarr (Paul).

While growing up in Ochre River, Manitoba, Doreen would meet the love of her life, Melvin Gilroy. Doreen and Mel would share their first kisses through screen doors, worked summer jobs at Barkers Canteen at Dauphin Beach, Manitoba, and shared a love for sports like curling and golf, as they grew up together.

Doreen moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, to pursue and receive her LPN designation from Red River College before moving back to Dauphin, Manitoba to do her practical training. She also would be blessed with her first child, Carolyn Ann Corda.

Doreen and Mel married on August 5th, 1972, at the Grace Baptist Church in Ochre River, Manitoba. Doreen and Mel would move to Brandon, Manitoba in 1973, before moving to Alexander, Manitoba in 1981. In Alexander, Manitoba, they would welcome their children, Michelle Alice Gilroy, Lindsay Dawn (n. Gilroy) Hyman, and Melvin Alexander Brett Gilroy. The family would move back to Brandon, Manitoba, Ochre River, Manitoba, and finally Winnipeg, Manitoba. They remained in these places for 53 years where they shared fond memories of raising their children and welcoming their beloved grandchildren, Carson MacCauley Hyman, Lachlyn Rose Hyman and Ryan Michael Corda.

Doreen worked in the Brandon Hospital in the Nursery until 1987, when she upgraded to RN and moved to the NICU Nursery. In 1989, she became the Co-ordinator for the Neo-natal Resuscitation Program and was nominated for Nurse of the Year Award in 1994. She continued to work there until her retirement in 2010 when Doreen and Melvin would return to Ochre River so that Doreen could help care for her parents.

Mel and Doreen continued to live in Ochre River, Manitoba, and it was there that Doreen developed Alzheimer’s Disease. Mel’s love for Doreen gave him the strength to care for Doreen until her disease progressed to a state that he could no longer provide the care needed due to his own declining health. Mel, though breaking his heart, made the courageous decision to seek help for Doreen and she entered into a care home in Winnipeg, Manitoba, which he followed close behind. Sadly, Mel passed away on January 22nd, 2025, and to his dying days all he wanted was to make sure Doreen was taken care of.

Doreen had many passions that she excelled at, including curling, running, golf, gardening, nursing, true crime, scrapbooking, camping, shopping, walking her dogs and reading.. However she was always most proud of her husband, children, and grandchildren.

Doreen has now joined the love of her life, Mel, and are survived by her daughter, Carolyn Ann Corda along with her child, Ryan Michael Corda, their daughter, Michelle Alice Gilroy, their daughter, Lindsay Dawn Hyman along with her husband, Bryan Hyman and children, Carson MacCauley Hyman and Lachlyn Rose Hyman, her son, Melvin Alexander Brett Gilroy (“Alex”) along with his partner Amanda Meda, her siblings and many nieces and nephews and friends.

Doreen is predeceased by her father, Eric, and mother, Christina, and her father-in-law, Robert Gilroy, and her mother-in-law, Ida Gilroy and of course, all of her beloved pets over the years.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on June 25th, 2025 at Trinity United Church, 1515 6th Street, Brandon, Manitoba.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation be made to Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter or the La Leche League (breast feeding education).

Doreen’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Funny how life is! Last week I was thinking about Doreen and then I heard this sad news! My sympathy to her family and friends-- a life well lived! Today I watched her celebration of life and it was such a beautiful tribute--- beautiful like her!❤️Every word spoken so true and perfect! I worked with both Doreen and Phyllis and what wonderful co-workers they were!❤️Oh if those old nursery rocking chairs could talk about our 0300 hr conversations we would blush and laugh! Those were the days my friends!❤️ Rest easy Doreen and everyone that knew you will continue to share your kindness as it is a true gift!❤️

So sorry to hear this news....... Doreen was such a wonderful co-worker, someone who took time to show me the ropes when I first started and who could always be relied on in a crunch. Lots of stories on the night shift- if we ever had one that was quiet enough to share them. She leaves big shoes to fill. I wish you all peace and good memories.

My dear sister was a very kind and gentle soul. She was my big sister. She bought me my first doll, named Star, and helped me make clothes for her out of the bag of remnants our Mom collected. She took me to lunch at Woolworth store for a hoagie, it was so deliciouS! She taught me how to spit out toothpaste after brushing my teeth and gave me a sip of beer when I was 5 so I couldn't tell on her. She was fun and glamorous to me and I loved her. I will remember her as the beautiful young girl she was and for the kindness she always showed me. I will always miss her.

I'm so very sorry to hear of Doreen's passing. To her family...May your happy memories bring you peace and strength.

I worked with Doreen in the Nursery/NICU for many years. Memorable night shifts filled with laughter, sometimes tears and heart to heart conversations. She always enjoyed playing a prank when the time was right! No one would ever suspect that it was her! Doreen loved her family deeply and enjoyed life. She was so proud of her family!

May you rest in peace my friend.
