CAROL MAE GIROUX

September 27, 1944 – August 13, 2024

With sadness, the family of Carol Mae Giroux of Winnipeg, Manitoba announces that she passed away suddenly on August 13, 2024, at the age of 79.

Carol is survived by her daughter Deanna Lanoway; granddaughter Ava Lanoway; grandson Dryden Lanoway; and son Phillip Giroux. She was preceded by her daughter Michelle Giroux; and partner Alan Hume.

Carol was born in Sault Ste Marie Ontario, the only child of Veronica and Wallace Cummings. When she was a young girl, the family moved to Northern Manitoba, settling in Lynn Lake and opening the clothing store ‘Cummings’. Her father Wallace passed away while Carol was still young, making her an early helper in working at the store. In addition to working at the store, Carol volunteered on various community committees as a bookkeeper and at the town library. She took many years of accounting courses while in Lynn Lake, inspiring her children with her hard work. Changes in the economy of the town led Carol to move to Winnipeg with her children in 1985. There, she worked in accounting for construction companies until retiring in 2013.

Carol had a lifetime love of animals, particularly cats. She was known to provide a loving home for senior cats in their last years. They were a constant source of joy for her and she loved each of them dearly.

Carol was a private person.  She loved the quiet of home, where she enjoyed watching sports, doing a jigsaw puzzle or finishing a crossword. The family has chosen to honour her desire for no formal service. Please remember Carol in your own way, keeping her in your thoughts and hearts. Flowers are gratefully declined. If you wish, a donation to your local humane society or animal rescue shelter would be a fitting remembrance for Carol.

Carol’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I was a little girl when I met Carol, who was the mom of one of my best friends. I was always in awe of her love for her children and her work ethic. I extend my most heartfelt sympathies to her beautiful family.

I am so sorry for all of Carols family.

Shopping at Cummings store was always a pleasure. Carol and her Mom had the best way of answering you honestly about how something looked on you. She once told me the dress i wanted looked like a Xmas tree with the tiers. We had a good laugh over that. I have been grateful ever since that i listened to her. RiP Carol.

I am so sorry to learn of Carol's death. She was integral to my childhood years in Lynn Lake, where I lived across the street above my dad's store. Cummings was always a place to shop and where mom stored her bulbs for the winter, in the dugout basement! It was lovely to see Deanna recently at the LL reunion. My warmest condolences to all of you and to Carol's friends at this time of sorrow. May she rest in peace .

My condolences to Carol's family. I have many memories - as many others have - of the Cummings store, which was an integral part of Lynn Lake.
