Gerald Glenn

GERALD “GERRY” ELWOOD GLENN
May 28, 1951 - November 20, 2024
Gerald “Gerry” Elwood Glenn, born May 28,1951, passed away in Winnipeg on November 20, 2024 at the age of 73.
Gerry is survived by his long-time friend Lil Vincent; his sister Donna Boutang; and niece Kailey Boutang. He was predeceased by his wife Yvonne; and parents, Maurice and Winnie Glenn; his brother in law Lev Boutang; and nephew Josh Boutang.
Gerry grew up in Strathclair Manitoba. The family lived on the farm near Salt Lake for his first 6 years before moving to town after Donna (nicknamed Squirt by Gerry) was born and Mum went back to teaching. Dad continued to farm and Gerry loved all the animals. We have a picture of him riding a pig at three years old, before Dad would buy him a horse. He always said Strathclair was a great place to grow up. He was devastated when his best friend/cousin Russ was killed in a plane crash.
Gerry enjoyed sports and all the friends he made participating in them. Later he became a true Bombers and Jets fan. Gerry worked at many part time jobs as a kid, including delivering newspapers and water from the town pump on a toboggan pulled by his dog. He met his wife Yvonne in high school and they were married in 1971 soon after moving to Winnipeg. Gerry went to Red River Community College before starting to work for the Provincial Government where he worked in different departments for 34 years before retiring in 2004. His Environmental work group, Carl Orcutt, Barry Tuckett and Merv Pilkey were important friends from this time. Gerry was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
In 1986 Gerry and Yvonne moved to a hobby farm near Meadows just outside Winnipeg. While they both still drove into the city to work, they worked hard on the farm keeping many different kinds of animals including horses, donkeys, llamas, pot belly pigs, peacocks, goats and many others. Gerry's neighbour across the road, Paul McLeod, became a lifelong friend. They curled and golfed together with a great group of others from the Rosser area. Gerry's love of horses expanded to him partnering in the ownership of a dozen thoroughbreds at Assiniboine Downs Race Track. He also enjoyed traveling and over the years got to almost all areas of Canada, many countries in Europe, parts of the US, as well as Jamaica, Mexico and Cuba.
In 2009 Gerry and Yvonne moved to Killarney which gave him a chance to connect with family on Mum's side. In 2015 it was back to where it all began, Strathclair. He appreciated being welcomed back by all the cousins and town people. Sadly, Yvonne died shortly after this move but Gerry was there for Mum after Dad died, until they both moved to Winnipeg to be closer to Donna.
He and his friend Lil enjoyed many fun times together and she saw Gerry through some difficult times. He will be greatly missed.
Gerry suffered with health issues, which were difficult and forced his retirement, but his death was unexpected. A donation in his name to the War Amps or the Canadian Wildlife Association would be appreciated.
Gerry’s ashes will be buried in the family plot at the Strathclair Cemetery in the early summer 2025.
Gerry’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

My deepest sympathies to Gerry's family. Although I didn't know Gerry very well, we always had a good visit when he and Yvonne would visit my in-laws in Wpg. I was able to visit with them twice while they lived in Killarney.
