JOHN (JAN) GNALL

1942 - 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of John (Jan) Gnall, who passed away on December 30, 2025.

John was predeceased by his beloved wife Dagmar (November 9, 2023). He is lovingly remembered by his children Dagmar Snell (Jeff), Claudia Nichols (Brad), and Johnny Gnall (Maren), and his cherished grandchildren Julia, Jake, Jordon, Jack, Eric, and Jamie. He is also survived by extended family in Slovakia and sister-in-law Mirka Brisson (Doug) and son Frank in Ontario.

Born in Valkovce, Slovak Republic, John immigrated to Canada in 1968, settling in Winnipeg, where he built both a family and a life he loved. A driven and ambitious entrepreneur, he owned and operated Hilton Amusements, Long John Silver’s Arcades in Winnipeg, Brandon, and Portage la Prairie, K&K Entertainment, and later founded Avco Security providing residential and commercial alarms with CCTV surveillance. Over the past few years John continued working at API.

Dad was never afraid of hard work and always welcomed a challenge. He was very handy and enjoyed helping others. Known for his generosity, humor, and strong work ethic, he enjoyed biking, weightlifting, target shooting, and entertaining by his pool with a shot of brandy, and traditional Slovak cooking. John and Dagmar loved spending time with their Slovak friends at many gatherings and celebrations. Above all, he cherished his family and grandchildren and was known for his jokes and pranks. Dad, lovingly known as Oco to his grandchildren, will be deeply missed by his family.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at River Park Gardens for their compassionate care.

A private family gathering will be held.

John’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Janko, brat, ťažko hľadám slová, že už nie si. Aj keď nas delila diaľka roky , ale vedela som že si. No život prináša aj odnáša . Ty si odišiel tam, kde sa stretneme vsetci . Odpočívaj v pokoji v zemi ktoru si si vybral za domov, ale na rodnú hrudu si nezabudol. So stálou spomienkou na Teba sestra Vierka s Palkom a rodinou.

My sincere condolences are felt for the loss of your father. John was funny and a pleasure to be around, he was very generous in helping my father and family with cars and house hold and kitchen appliances whenever something broke down. Your parents and mine enjoyed many years visiting eachother many times per week! Our family has many great memories spent with your family! May he Rest in Peace.
