ELIZABETH KEENAN GREELEY

(née WHAMMOND)

March 22, 1933 - September 7, 2023

Sadly, we announce the passing of our wonderful mom and Grandma, Elizabeth “Betty” Greeley. Mom passed away in the morning of September 7 at Oakview Extendicare.

Betty was predeceased by her husband Charles Greeley; sister Irene Castle; and many close friends and family who were an important part of her 90 years. She is survived by her daughter Katherine; grandson Kyle; and granddaughter Meghan in BC.

Born in Dundee, Scotland, mom came to Winnipeg in 1956 and began employment at Western Savings and Loan. On September 6, 1958, she married the love of her life, Charles Greeley. As fate would have it, both were from Dundee and met in Winnipeg. Over their 61 years of marriage together they shared much love, laughter, and kindness with each other and everyone in their lives.

Betty returned to work at The Bay Unicity, after 10 years at home raising her daughter. She worked there until she retired.

Mom enjoyed many years of fellowship at St David’s Presbyterian Church, the Ladies’ Guild, and as a volunteer at Deer Lodge Centre. Mom was an incredible hostess. She loved to cook, bake, and entertain, and her home was always a gathering place for a simple cup of tea or dinner parties and holiday gatherings.

Mom loved to travel. Her and dad were fortunate to have enjoyed many trips together over the years. Camping trips to the US, and trips to Bermuda, Portugal, Morocco, Holland and UK. However, Mom’s favourite trips were to BC to visit her grandkids. She said she never knew how much love her heart could hold until someone called her Grandma.

A big thank you to the staff at Oakview for the care, kindness and comfort provided to mom.

As promised, I am bringing mom and dad home to Scotland in the spring.

If you choose, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada. Or, in mom’s spirit, give your gift of time to someone in need.

Betty's family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

Lovely tribute to Betty. ❤  I’ve know Betty and Charlie since they moved to Moorgate Street.  Katherine and my brother Ken were the same age so my parents were friends although they were older than Betty and Charlie. Then when we were raising our girls on Moorgate Betty would have special “treats” for them at Halloween (like skull earrings - although my daughters couldn’t understand what Betty was telling them because of her accent). I always loved that Betty and Charlie never lost their Scottish accent.  They were such a devoted couple and loved to have friends over.  They took much pride in their yard and home, but especially Katherine and the Grandchildren.  They enjoyed their trips to visit them as well as having them visit here in Winnipeg. Their home on Moorgate Street will always be The Greeley House to our family.
