JOYCE GREEN

(née Maas)

April 20, 1947 - April 17, 2016

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joyce Green (nee Maas).   Three days shy of her 69th birthday, Joyce passed on April 17, 2016 surrounded by her loving family at the Riverview Health Centre.

Joyce is predeceased by her parents Liz Maas (nee Sayers) and Jan Maas; and her nephews Elijah Maas and Elias Maas.  She is survived by her husband Jack, daughter Naomi, daughter Zoe, son Andre, daughter Thea, granddaughter Sierra; her siblings Michael (Crissy), Mohrea (Garrett), Richard, Roy (LyLyanna), Donald, Patrick (Peggy), Rosalie (Dave); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joyce was born on April 20, 1947 in Jakarta, Indonesia.  At the age of 12, Joyce’s family moved to the Netherlands where they lived until 1967, when the family moved to Canada.

Joyce’s first job in Winnipeg was at Christie’s Biscuits factory on Notre Dame where she met Jack, her future husband.  They soon married in 1969 and had 4 children during their 46 years together.

After her brief time at Christie’s Biscuits, Joyce moved on to work at the CIBC where she developed skills and interest in accounting.  She then spent the remainder of her career at the University of Manitoba in the Accounts Payable department until her early retirement in 2002.

Although Joyce enjoyed her professional life, family was most important to her.  Outside of work, Joyce had many passions that kept her continually busy.  She loved to dance, listen to music, read, and travel.  She was also an accomplished and self-taught cook, baker, seamstress, gardener, upholsterer, and knitter.  Her creative gifts were often a means of expressing her love for her friends and family.  Formidable and hard working, she didn’t do anything in half measures.  Her motto was ‘if you’re going to something, do it right’.  She took great pride in her abilities and strove to pass on her values of hard work and lifelong learning to her children.

Joyce was deeply loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed.  As per her wishes, cremation has taken place.  A service will be held in Vancouver in the summer of 2016 (date to be determined) for family.

Joyce’s family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff in the Riverview Health Centre’s Palliative Care unit.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Riverview Health Centre Foundation,One Morley Avenue,Winnipeg, MB  R3L 2P4.
