Edith Grunfeld
EDITH GRUNFELD
March 4, 1924 - December 10, 2018
Edith Grunfeld passed peacefully on the morning of Monday, December 10, 2018, at the age of 94.
"Nana" is survived by her sister Judith Kathein; niece Roni Bloch; cherished sons, Tom (Leslie) and Richard (Lee Anne). She was the proud grandmother of Daniel, Ian (Marita), Benjamin (Pancham), and Aaron (Alina). Edith was the loving great-grandmother of Liliana, Norah, Rani, Finn, and Asa.
Nana was persistent enough to get her family together every year so they could meet and connect and form a bond that would not have happened without her. The tradition of these reunions will continue and Nana will be deeply missed.
Edith was strong willed, disciplined, good natured and had an endless passion for her family. She was a holocaust survivor who had numerous health challenges. She and her former husband, Tibor Grunfeld, raised their sons in Montreal. After years of working as a hair colourist, she returned to education and earned a certificate in social services and for many years caringly worked with and supported single parent families in Winnipeg.
In her later years, she took up water colour painting and has subsequently left us with cherished reminders of her presence. During these years and into retirement, Edith loved spending the winter months in Phoenix. During the summer she enjoyed wonderful times with family at the cottage. As personal computers became available, Edith diligently acquired the skills to keep in contact with her widespread family and to document family history.
The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Victoria and Grace General Hospitals and Margarita from Jewish Child and Family Services. As well our most deeply felt gratitude to Denise, Kitas and Rosa whose compassion and support in the final years of Edith’s life was invaluable.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
