HOWARD GUDZ

June 30, 1950 – January 3, 2026

With broken hearts we announce the passing of Howard Gudz at the age of 75 on the evening of January 3rd following a short but fierce battle with cancer. Howard was an honest and humble man who loved and cherished his wife Marilyn and his daughters Jackie (Matthew) and Krissy. Papa was so proud to be a grandpa to his young grandchildren Henry, Keira, Tyra and Cole.

Howard was appointed to the Winnipeg Police Service December 1968 at the age of 18. He retired from the WPS in 1998 as Patrol Sergeant and quickly continued working with purpose, first at the Winnipeg Commodity Exchange and later with the Manitoba Employment Standards as an investigator. Howard was a faithful member of the Wellness Institute with a workout routine so disciplined it rivalled that of a professional athlete. He truly enjoyed his alone time on his John Deere riding mower or watching his Bombers, Jets, Vikings and of course the Blue Jays.

Every evening at 4:30 whether 30 above or 30 below, you would find him in the hot tub listening to CJOB. Howard was well travelled with trips to Holland, Spain, Hawaii and throughout the United States and Canada. Ten years ago this month he spent 5 weeks in South East Asia with his daughter Jackie. He also made yearly January trips to Texas with his wife and their dog Gilbert and later Gabby. Howard looked forward to monthly “cards” at the McCaskill residence and according to him he won most games!

He was preceded in death by his brother Don; his parents, Lydia and Henry; and his granddaughter Evelyne. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba and more importantly Howard would want everyone to give an extra hug and kiss to their loved ones.

Celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21st, at First Unitarian Universalist Church at 603 Wellington Crescent.

Howard, a trusted friend, good neighbour, good man. We were blessed to form a strong friendship over many years with him, Marilyn, their families and their pets. We consider ourselves blessed by the many memories, and life events we shared with Howard and Marilyn. it has already been said that Howard had some set routines. One we remember with smiles is also documented with a picture Marilyn shared with us...Sunday mac and cheese. This was a Howard specialty and he always had a patient audience...various family pets would always gather round for their share. We could give more examples of our experiences with Howard..like the time Harold tried to chat him up when he was on a stakeout, or the time he sat with Dawn in her hospital room serving as a trusted friend when she received medical information. We learned many times he would be there for us, and we are deeply saddled by his loss. Our hearts go out to Marilyn, Jacke and Matthew, and Kris as they go on without him. Sending hugs and love

Howard and Marilyn have been our neighbours for close to 35 years. Everyday (weather permitting) I would see either of them walking their dog. Howard was alway friendly and would always stop and chat with you. We will miss him. Rest in peace Howard. Marilyn are thoughts are with you. Whatever you need we are here to help you.

We shared lots of fun times over the years with Howard and Marilyn on trips to New Orleans, Las Vegas and San Diego, Prince Edward Island and Halifax, and Texas, as well as enjoying each other's hospitality in our respective homes in Winnipeg and Ottawa. Lots of sightseeing, and shopping and chatting for the ladies and golf for the men. Howard's sense of humour and storytelling were a key factor in the fun. He wil be remembered and missed. Our hearts go out to Marilyn and the girls and those beautiful grandchildren. We are so sorry not to be able to pay our respects in person, but we send prayers and hugs.

A long time neighbour of ours in St.Andrews, Howard had a great sense of sharp dry humour and you definitely set your watch by his routines, and that included "hot tub" hour. He was also a very interesting golf partner and would very easily lose a dozen or so balls a round. He always marked his balls with a large HG. One day at a golf dinner, he won a sleeve of balls and when he went to pick up his prize, he mentioned that he will have to mark them with HG as soon as he got home. Immediately, several golfers at the dinner shouted out laughing that they had several HG balls in their bag and it was nice to finally meet the owner of the HG balls. He was legendary and will be missed. Rest in peace, Howard.

So sorry to hear about Howard. We worked plain clothes together in the North End. In our next careers we were both ACFI members. Great guy to work with. Lots of laughs and good memories. Rest in peace Howie.

I had the privilege of working with Howard at the Winnipeg Commodity Exchange. Howard was a calm and thoughtful presence on our team, and I continued to enjoy meeting him for lunch for a number of years after his departure from the Exchange. I remember how much he loved his life with Marilyn and his kids, on their lovely property just outside the city. Howard was a true gentleman in all he did.

It saddens me greatly to read of Howard's early passing. I lived on Bannerman Avenue for 20 years at 843 and my parents were very good friends with Henry and Lydia. We were a great and close group of neighbours, a fine area in which to grow and thrive although we were not schooled in our home areas. We grew into productive adults from our upbringing there. I am very sorry for your family's loss. The Gudz Family was a treasure.

Marylin, Jackie, Krisat & all family friends of Howard- I hold memories of Howard mowing the lawn next door, then retreating to the hot tub for his cjob updates. He was a wonderful man—always smiling and friendly. Sending love and hugs to you all during this difficult transition. I bet there’s a big card game happening right now...<3
