CLARENCE "CLARE" HADEWICH

February 17, 1959 - September 3, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce, after a brief illness, the passing of Clare (Clarence Johnny Hadewich) on Friday Sept 3, 2021 at Grace General Hospital.

Clare leaves to mourn in passing his step-son Andrew Paslawsky, daughter-in-law Lauren, and grandson Milo; special friends Ramona Bonwick, Bruce Armstrong, and Jim Simpson; mother Rose Hadewich, of St. Albert, AB; as well as his aunt Anne Elash (nee Hadewich) of Melville, Saskatchewan, and uncle Harold (Gloria) of Goodeve, Saskatchewan; as well as numerous cousins.

Clare grew up in Ituna, Saskatchewan where he lived down the street from his Baba and GiGi. He spoke fondly of his memories of going there after school to watch The Edge of Night with his Baba.

Clare often shared his memories of the time that he spent working with his dad at the Coop and in the garden, his father meant the world to him. His time with his dad was cut short by an accident when Clare was 12 that ended his dad’s life. Clare’s love for gardening continued throughout his life. Over the past ten years he had gardened with his friend, Jim Simpson. He took pride in the harvest and sharing it with those closest to him.

Clare’s strongest connection to his dad was curling, which he did for more 50 years. His curling team changed over the years, and some of them were like brothers to him, like his friend and longtime team mate Bruce Armstrong. Clare’s preference was to skip, and his proudest moment happened November 17, 2010 when he got an Eight Ender.

Clare spoke fondly of his childhood memories of spending time with his aunts, uncles, and cousins. He had a special relationship with his cousins’ Bev and Johanna Elash, along with Johanna’s children, Brenden, Kaitlyn, and Christopher. He was thrilled to have them in his life, speaking often of their accomplishments and successes. He loved them very much.

Clare moved to Manitoba to complete his secondary education at St. Vladimir’s College in Roblin, Manitoba. This was an experience that further immersed him in his Ukrainian culture. Singing with Hoosli Choir was a highlight of his life. From there, Clare came to Winnipeg to attend the U of M where he completed his post-secondary education. Immediately after graduation he began working at Oseredok planning the Papal visit. Soon after he married Anne, and during their time together they travelled with the Rusalka Ukrainian Dance Ensemble to performances in many countries, including Ukraine.

It was around that time that Clare began his 26-year career with Canada Revenue Agency. He was actively involved in the Winnipeg Tax Centre recreational sports, including Baseball, golf tournaments, hockey, and the annual curling bonspiels.

He then went on to work for the Manitoba Tax Assistance Office, where he’d been for the past seven years. Clare was a knowledgeable and valued co-worker, always happy to share his expertise. It was at the Tax Centre where Clare met Ramona; their friendship began 25 years ago.

Their relationship developed, and eventually they lived together for about ten years. Clare was proud to be Andrew’s stepdad, and Andrew affectionately referred to him as Pappy Hadewich. During the many years that Andrew played football Clare was a proud parent on the sidelines. They took many family trips to Alberta enjoying the company of friends and family along the way. Most often the trips included a night over in Regina and taking in a Roughrider game. After living in Manitoba for more than 40 years, Clare remained a loyal and devoted fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Even after Clare and Ramona separated, they continued to have family dinners and holiday celebrations together. Most recently he shared in the excitement of the birth of their grandson Milo Andrew Paslawsky; Clare was proud to be Gramps to Milo.

Clare was embraced by Ramona’s family. They had many special memories of times spent with Ramona’s Dad and Stepmom – Lloyd and Marian Bonwick, her Aunt Vi and Uncle Eugene Syrotiuk, as well as Aunty Judy and Uncle Victor Koroscil.

Clare encouraged Andrew to try new things and took great pride in-teaching him how to curl, inviting him onto his team whenever they were short along with curling together in the odd Bonspiel, including the MCA. Clare enjoyed golfing spending many summer days golfing with Andrew, with more time spent correcting his strokes missed at the end of the game. Clare loved being a father to Andrew, supporting him during challenging times and encouraging Andrew to do the best that he could in whatever he took on.

A private memorial service is being held to honour his memory. His ashes will be interned in Ituna at a later date. In the meantime, Clare’s family kindly requests that his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please also consider sharing your own photos and/or sharing your own memories and stories using the comment section on this page.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to Anxiety Disorders Association of Manitoba.

Here's Claire and the Revenue Canada ladies back in the day.  Knocking down pins, drinks and food, looking for a berth in the Nationals.  My sincere condolences to the family and friends.

Always think of you, Clare, when we pass St. Vlad's on the way to Madge Lake each year. And your Roughriders' jersey.  And standing between the pipes in Friday afternoon hockey. Condolences to your family and close friends.

I fondly remember working with Clare. He never backed down from a good-natured argument and his dry humor always brightened my day. Rest easy Clare. Wendi
