Aileen Hamm

AILEEN JOAN HAMM
(née Dikens)
1929 - 2025
Aileen Joan Hamm (née Dikens) passed peacefully on February 4th 2025 at the age of 95, after living a full and active life.
Aileen was predeceased by her husband William Jared Hunter Hamm, sister Norma, and brother Floyd. She was also predeceased by her parents James and Editha Dikens.
She will be dearly missed by her children Linda (Rod), Larry (Cathy), and Rod (Susan) and grandchildren Mitchell (Mahder) and Braeden (Sophie). She is also survived by her sister-in-law Lea Hamm and her nieces and nephews.
Aileen was born in Davidson, Saskatchewan in 1929. Her father was a Train Station Agent so the family moved frequently to different small towns in Saskatchewan for his job.
After completing high school, Aileen moved to Winnipeg where she obtained her teaching certificate at Normal School. Her first teaching job was at Norwood School where a colleague introduced her to her brother William (Bill) who was to become Aileen's husband in 1957. Aileen and Bill were married for 60 years before Bill passed at the age of 88 in 2017.
Aileen and Bill had three children and Aileen was a stay-at-home mother until the youngest child, Rod, started school. She started teaching part-time at a nearby school so she could still be home with her children as much as possible. Aileen eventually moved to full time, teaching elementary grade students, a career which she loved and found very fulfilling. She retired at the age of 64.
In addition to being a school teacher, Aileen had many interests. She continued her education receiving both a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Manitoba. She was a dedicated student and a perfectionist, always receiving very high marks in all her courses.
She was interested and involved in many activities in which she often also involved her children. She had season's tickets to several theatre companies and the ballet. She was an avid line dancer and played the violin.
She loved traveling with others or by herself including trips to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Bahamas, California, and New York. She enjoyed art, music, and photography. She was rarely without her camera at family events or you would often find her walking around the neighbourhood taking pictures of flowers and trees. Aileen also walked at least a mile a day every day for many years into her eighties.
Aileen was a kind, caring, generous, and vibrant woman and a loving wife, mother, sister, and friend. She will be greatly missed. A private family service and burial will be held.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the entire staff at the Rosewood and Tuxedo Villa as well as the staff at Grace Hospital for their kind care.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society or a charity of your choice.
Aileen’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.
