SHAUNALEE HATTON

October 18, 1956 – October 29, 2025

It is with profound sadness that the family of Shaunalee Hatton announces her passing on October 29th, 2025 at the age of 69 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

She is survived by her devoted husband Douglas; daughter Sheena (Greg); son Nathan (Rosie); sister Kim (Tim); brother Brad; sister-in-law Janet; brother-in-law Gill (Lydia); grandchildren, Cooper, Aubrey, and Carter; along with many extended family members and friends. She was predeceased by her mother, Beryl Winder; and father, Peter Bunio.

Shaunalee was born on October 18, 1956, in Fort Frances, Ontario. She spent her early life in Kenora, Ontario, and Shoal Lake, Manitoba graduating from high school in 1974. From a young age, Shaunalee demonstrated exceptional academic ability, excelling in mathematics and physics. Gifted with an artistic nature, Shaunalee produced many beautiful drawings, blankets and a large hooked rug. A self-taught musician, she mastered both the piano and the guitar, finding joy and expression through music. She put together an all girls band that won a talent contest through the local radio station. Throughout her youth, Shaunalee spent summers working at her family’s store in Clear Lake, Manitoba.

Shaunalee graduated from the St. Boniface Hospital School of Nursing in 1976 and subsequently earned her Medical Radiation Technologist diploma in 1979. She worked at St. Boniface Hospital and Cancer Care Manitoba as a Radiation Therapist taking great pride in her work caring for thousands of patients with empathy and compassion over the course of her career.

Shaunalee’s greatest joy in life was her family. She married her husband Doug on December 31/1982 and together they welcomed son Nathan and daughter Sheena. She poured her heart and soul into raising her children and took immense pride in the people they became. She was always on the sidelines cheering them on at sporting events, patiently helping with school work, and took extra care to make birthdays and other holidays memorable. Becoming a grandmother was one of Shaunalee’s proudest moments. She adored her grandchildren and cherished every moment spent with them whether it was attending sporting events, family vacations or a snuggle and movie on the couch. Her love and devotion as a grandmother will be remembered forever.

Shaunalee had a love for dogs and had many family pets throughout her lifetime. Her faithful companion, Sam, brought her much comfort and joy throughout her illness.

Outside of her professional life, Shaunalee was known for her many talents. She was an exceptional cook, hosting countless gatherings for family and friends. She was also a true handywomen. She tackled many home renovations including tiling, flooring, as well as building a deck and treehouse in the backyard for her children and grandchildren to enjoy. Shaunalee had a gift for bringing people together. The Annual Hatton Christmas Eve gatherings were filled with love, laughter, and music and were attended by numerous friends and family members.

Shaunalee created countless family memories on trips to Mexico, Florida and annual road trips to Texas when her children were young. In retirement she enjoyed trips to Phoenix and travelled to Europe with Santorini, Greece being her most memorable destination. Summers at Lake of the Woods on the houseboat were particularly special. You could always find her on the dock with a fishing rod in the water.

Family would like to extended their heartfelt appreciation to all of the doctors and nurses at Cancer Care, as well as the Palliative Care Program for their kindness, support and exceptional care shown to Shaunalee during her illness. They would also like to thank the many friends and family members who have offered love and encouragement during this difficult time.

A private family gathering will be held in her honour followed by a celebration of life in Spring 2026.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or Cancer Care Manitoba.

We are heartbroken for your loss Doug, Nate and Sheena. Your Mom was a dear friend whom we met during our hockey years. She will always be remembered as the best host, the most genuine and uncomplaining person. We shared fabulous meals cooked by her and marvelled at her skill with renovations. She was so proud of you all and loved her grandkids to pieces. Shaunalee never had a bad word to say about anyone and battled her cancer silently and bravely. She is in all our hearts forever and we will miss her so very much. With love..,

Thank you for pouring your heart, time, and love into raising me. You gave so much of yourself, always putting us first because being our mom meant everything to you. You were proud and joyful, constantly reminding us how much we meant to you. I’m forever grateful and lucky for the care and support you gave through every high and low with endless patience, compassion, and understanding. Your work ethic, consistency, and kindness inspired me. I’ll forever cherish the memories we shared: the countless road trips to Texas and through Canada, our adventures to Disneyland, Universal Studios, various hockey tournaments, and many lakeside and cabin getaways. You made holidays magical, birthdays unforgettable, and every meal you made was filled with love. Now that you’re gone, my heart is full of sadness, gratitude, heartbreak, and love. You will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will carry your love with me always.

Here is one of my favourite pictures of us.

I was a student in radiation therapy when I first met Shaunalee and her dedication to our patients was deep and profound. Over the years, her leadership in managing patient workload was always patient centered. At the same time, she cared for her co-workers- I was in awe of her ability to cook for up to 70 people when we hosted staff breakfast or lunch and she would go above and beyond to serve others..

Your tribute captured that sparkle in her eyes full of love for her family.

Doug, Sheena and Nathan, thank you for sharing Shaunalee with us for so many years- she will be missed by many.

Doug and all of Shaunalee’s family, we’re so sorry for this. It’s heartbreaking to think that we’ll all have to live in a world without her. We were study buddies, coworkers, and friends for so many years. From the start, I was drawn to Shaunalee’s sharp mind, dry sense of humour, hard work, and unwavering compassion for others. We saw this in her as a loving family member, friend, and dedicated coworker. She always put others first and was one of the most genuine people I’ve ever met.

We miss her already..

What beautiful photo tribute!

It was my privilege to work with Shaunalee for many decades at CCMB.

her kindness and compassion touched so many lives,. Patients, and their families, staff and students.

Shauna gave her best every day and CancerCare was a better place for having her as a dedicated Radiation Therapist.

My condolences to Doug, Nathan, Sheena and the whole family.

Rest in peace Shaunalee, you will always be missed.
