DARLENE HAY

(née NICHOLS)

August 9, 1944 - May 2, 2021

With heavy hearts, we announce that Darlene passed away peacefully, in her home, at the age of 76 years.

Darlene will be terribly missed by her loving husband of 57 years, Kirby; daughter Jodie (Brent); son Kevin; grandchildren, Marley, Trenton, Mackenzie, and Olivia; sister Barb (Alf) Roberts; and extended family and friends.

Darlene was born in Carman to Leonard and Margaret Nichols.  She enjoyed a happy childhood on the farm with her parents and younger sister Barb.  She attended school at Tobacco Creek, followed by Wingham and Graysville.  She loved skating at recess and spending time with her family and friends, especially cooking with her mother.

She moved to Winnipeg after school and met the love her life, Kirby, whom she married May 30, 1964.  Together they raised 2 children, Jodie and Kevin.  In addition to being a mother, she started her career at Great West Life as a data entry operator and went on to work at Kleyson Transport and finally at IBM.

In retirement Darlene was busier than ever.  She and Kirby volunteered together on the board of the Manitoba Prostate Cancer Support Group where Darlene managed the database.  They also spent many happy winters in Arizona enjoying the company of so many good friends.  Her love for quilting was infectious.  She was the Piecemakers of Goodlife Programs Coordinator and taught quilting to others, including her husband Kirby.  She made quilts for not only family and friends but also for charity, including the Never Alone Foundation.  She continues to give love and warmth to so many through her quilts.

In keeping with Darlene’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal services will be held. Her family kindly requests that her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos and/or sharing your own memories and stories using the comment section on this page.

The family would also like to thank Dr Albak, Dr Desautel, Dr McIntosh and all the other medical professionals involved throughout her journey. Donations can be made in Darlene’s name to The Never Alone Foundation, CancerCare Manitoba or your charity of choice.

Growing up on Raquette Street brings back many fond memories of Darlene (Mrs. Hay). She was always cheerful, fun and easy going. As my parents aged she was so helpful to them. Darlene was a very special person to our family.

Darlene served on the board of directors of the Manitoba Prostate Cancer Support Group for many years. She did a superb job as manager of the IT requirements of the group and provided an invaluable service in that role. In addition both she and her husband Kirby participated in countless board meetings, sharing their wisdom and providing good advice towards governance of the group. Their contribution was and is greatly appreciated.  The board extends condolences to Kirby and the rest of her family. Rest in peace Darlene.

❤ Wow that tribute was so special. To see Mrs.Hay surrounded by her precious family; whom I know personally how much love and support she gave. All of her special memories down south.. both my Dad were so moved with her giving nature and story. 😢Although grief is never ending in hearts, it becomes treasure when we remember. I’ll miss both her & Kirby out in the garden at Kevin’s... and the few heart to heart chats I did have with her. Mr. Hay, Jodie, and Kev & family we send our support and love to all of you ; we personally know this loss as of late.... although painfully present great memories will bring a huge smile and great laughs between you all when remembering. God Bless 💕

"Wherever a beautiful soul has been .... there is a trail of beautiful memories". These words describe our very dear friend, Darlene. We have been fortunate to call Darlene & Kirby our friends since we met in 2007. Darlene was really a special person - talented in many ways. We will always treasure the distinctive quilt she designed & gave us for our anniversary.  Kirby, we share in your sorrow and send our sincere sympathy. Attaching a photo of our Newfoundland trip in 2009 - remembering the good times we shared together. Love & hugs, Brian and June Sprott
