Rita Hayward

RITA MARIE JEANNE HAYWARD
(née GIROUARD)
1941 – 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rita Hayward. She passed away surrounded by loved ones on June 1, 2025 at the age of 83. Waiting in heaven are her parents; brother Maurice; sisters in law, Marlene, Ruth, and Doreen; niece Linda; nephew David; and grandson Ethan.
Born in St. Norbert in 1941 to Marie and Arthur Girouard, she was the oldest of five children with four younger brothers (Maurice, Denis, Phil and Roland). She met and married Robert (Bob) Hayward in 1967 and were blessed with three girls, Suzanne (Greg), Kathy (Angus) and Kristine (Jim). She was a beloved grandmother to Kristina, Brandon (Savannah), Greggor (Abigail), Ethan, Mia, Ami and Taylor (Mike); and great grandmother to Jayden, Logan, Emelia, Desmond and Avalynn.
Anyone who knew Rita, knew of her musical abilities, sense of community and her commitment to her faith and family. In 1975, the family moved north and set up roots in The Pas, MB where Rita quickly became involved in the Roman Catholic church – Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish. Over the years, she took on many roles within the church from working in parish office, helping with the youth programs and leading the musical program. If you were married at the church in the 80’s-90’s, chances are she was your organist. She also became very involved in the Catholic Women’s League, completing two terms as president and recently received her 40-year pin. Rita also loved to sing. From her early debut on live radio as a child to participating in many community and church choirs, her strong soprano voice could be heard. In the last few years, her musical talents were tested trying to keep her ukulele playing family on time and in tune.
Beyond the church, Rita continued to volunteer and took pleasure in supporting the many pursuits of her children. She often volunteered at school and with The Pas Road Runner Swim club, even after her kids had moved on to other activities. Rita was also well known for coordinating the Coffee House at Northern Manitoba’s Trappers Festival.
Rita’s heart had a lot of room for others and she became a second mother to many. For years, she opened her home to young students helping with our school division’s French Immersion program or attending Keewatin Community College. Some came for a few months and ended up staying for a few years and may have made the status of pseudo brother. You would never know who you would meet sitting at our kitchen table. It may be a trades person in town for the annual ‘shutdown’ at the mill, or a vendor with a booth at the trade show during Trappers Festival. If the hotels were filled up, no worries, Rita likely had a spare bed or couch.
Rita also had a soft spot in her heart for those with varying abilities. What started out as a casual position supporting adults with disabilities find employment, turned into a career helping many gain skills and meaningful employment throughout the community. Upon retiring, she continued on as a board member at the Workplace for over a decade and covered holidays at the thrift store they operated.
After retiring, Rita and Bob hit the road and were lucky to travel throughout Canada and the US, often visiting their three girls in three different cities in three different provinces. When heading East, they also stopped in to check on the many boarders they had over the years. They often tagged along on family trips to Hawaii and Florida or summers spent camping or at the cottage. Rita would never pass up an opportunity to spend time with her grandchildren.
Although not sporty, Rita did enjoy the team camaraderie of bowling and was awarded a skunk trophy on many occasions. Rita also developed a love for the sport of curling. After a short stint playing the game, she became an avid fan. Rita and Bob often travelled to watch different curling bonspiels. They loved meeting other fans and of course the players, even if she cornered them coming out of the bathroom.
Mom, you can rest easy now
knowing that your job is done.
Your kids and grandkids will be
your legacy going forward,
helping to create a
better community.
Special thanks to Dr. Yang and her staff at CancerCare Manitoba and the Palliative Care team at Riverview Health Centre. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice in memory of Rita.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 6, 2025, at St. Anthony of Padua Parish located at 250 Burrin Avenue.
Rita’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I was one of the grateful recipients of Rita and Bob's hospitality. Fresh out of university, I travelled north to The Pas for a teaching position in the French Immersion program in 1996. I didn't realize that there were very limited housing options, and was extremely fortunate to be welcomed into the Hayward house. As a 21 year-old on my own for the first time, hundreds of kilometres from home, Rita was a beacon of care and warmth. Merci Rita

I had the pleasure of meeting Rita at a Christmas dinner at Sue's and Floyd's home in 2023. It was wonderful to hear Rita's story about her trip to Montreal when she was a young woman. I really enjoyed her story telling since she had a good sense of humour. She lived a full and purposeful life and will be remembered foundly.

John and I had the pleasure of hosting Rita and Bob a couple of times when they stopped-off in Calgary. We throughly enjoyed their company and stories! And especially loved Rita’s sense of humour and her matter-of- fact approach to life. Her observations always made us laugh!
Rita came, she loved (big and much), she lived (lots and full) and now she’s left - lots of memories, and many lives richer and fuller. May fond memories of her bring you comfort. Our deepest sympathy and condolences.

My dear Rita, rest in peace. I still remember the good times we had when we were single in Wpg. You & Elaine were my bridesmaids & you looked so lovely in your red dress. After you married Bob, you came here to visit me in Mtl. a few times. That was many, many years ago but we still stayed in touch. Memories....
Bob, I am so sorry. You were such a great couple. Take care.

Rita,
the world got a little dimmer without you in it. You made me laugh so hard many times. Working with you at the Workplace is a highlight of my working life! my Favourite memory is you rolling on the floor with a list trying to save the the drinks for the drink machine. Amy Hopper and I couldn't even help you because we were laughing so hard. Oh boy were mad at us. Rest easy my dear friend.

I enjoyed listening to Rita play the piano. She was very talented. Growing up, she was amazing to me as a friend of Suzanne's. She wouldn't be shy to tell me like it was if that's what I needed to hear, but it was always with kindness and love. One of my favorite memories is when I returned to The Pas for a high school reunion. She told Suzanne she expected me to come by and visit. I ended up coming over for a fish fry after Bob and Greg went fishing. OMG, it was so amazing, I was so full. But it was amazing to see Rita and Bob! 🥰
