RON HENDERSON

June 11, 1948 – March 29, 2021

Ronald Henderson passed away in the Grace General Hospital on March 29, 2021, after a year-long battle with cancer, surrounded by his wife and daughters.

Born in Kenora, Ron spent his early years in Whitemouth before the family moved to Portage la Prairie. He worked on construction with his older brother Lyle and for a while, owned a construction business. After graduating from the University of Manitoba, Ron taught at various schools, including Linwood, Stevenson-Britannia, Hedges and George Waters. He enjoyed coaching basketball and made several lifelong friends during this time. Ron remained interested in the world of mechanics his whole life. Before he passed, he had fixed up a 1966 Mustang convertible while attaching a new engine to his wife’s rototiller. Ron also enjoyed renovating homes. The house he lived in with his wife, Susan, and two daughters, Ashley and Rebecca, in Charleswood proved to be a real task in imagination.

The home they created for their children included a spacious back yard filled with adventure, hard work and beautiful memories. People always filled their home, whether it was his daughters’ school friends or the neighbours who grew to know Ron from his time puttering around the yard and helping others find solutions for yard work. Not to mention the weekly dinners with their neighbours, the Penners and Murrays, where he would entertain with his quirky sense of humour and barbecued delights. Even his daughter’s friends grew to know Ron as an iconic presence in the area, remembering his amusement at their antics and always game to add to their shenanigans.

Ron loved his daughters, Rebecca, Ashley and Tre. Their accomplishments made him very proud, and he filled the basement with their artwork, report cards and pictures. Still, Ron loved his wife more than anything. For almost 45 years, Ron and Susan travelled the world together. They went to Paris, London, Cairo, Luxor, Havana, George Town and Maui—to name a few. A WWII (self-described) historian, Ron even visited the Normandy landings on the coast of France, a lifelong dream of his. Ron loved to be active and took every chance he had to downhill ski, water ski and windsurf. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing golf with a close group of friends and displaying his pool skills in snooker at the Army and Navy on Portage with long time pool partner Ric. Ron also enjoyed camping, and the family went on several trips during the summer holidays to Asessippi, Mount Rushmore, Banff and Rushing River.

Ron leaves his wife Susan; daughters, Rebecca, Ashley, Tre, and family; brothers, Lyle (Sylvia), Keith (Sharon), Joe (Betty), Greg (Kathy), and Richard (Dian); sisters, Lois and Kathy; brother-in-law Brian (Maggie); and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to their close friend Bev, for her unending support during this time.

Ron has travelled one last time to the other side, where his family is sure he’s finding various tasks and jobs to complete like he once did in life. A celebration of Ron’s life is being planned for June 2021, when we are safely able to come together. In the meantime, Ron's family kindly requests that his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos and/or sharing your own memories and stories using the comment section on this page.

Please, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or D'Arcy's Animal Rescue Centre.

Dear Susan...Ashley and Rebecca... I am so very sorry to hear of Ron's passing.  We worked together for a time and we lived in the same neck of the woods; regrettably, we didn't see much of each other.  I do remember him as always having a jolly spirit, loving sports, and over the top happy with his family.   My sincere condolences to all of his family. So sorry for your loss Susan, Ashley and Rebecca. Ron was a down to earth kind of guy who seemed to always have a smile on his face. One could meet him once and it seemed like you knew him all your life.  Brian Gmiterek

We will miss you Uncle Ron. You were so fun-loving and genuine.  I see others commented here saying you reminded them of Hulk Hogan and that is how I remember you as a kid. So grateful for all the visits we had in recent years and that you got to meet your grand-nephew Miles. I'll forever remember you listening to classic rock on your sun porch and joking around. ❤

Mr. Henderson was my science and home room teacher at Hedges Junior High. If you asked me to name any other teachers I had during those three years I don't think I could. Mr. Henderson was memorable because of his humour, and sparkly eyes and the way he made you feel included, seen and that you mattered! I am so very sorry for you loss.

Ron was a special friend that I looked forward to seeing Saturday mornings during golf season. I'll miss his "definite maybe" when I asked him if he was joining us next Saturday, his "long and far" drives, his prowess on par 3 holes that earned him the nickname "Par 3 Ronnie", the years of our "spring flings" and "fall classics" at Steve's and Grand Pines and the many "golf guys and wives" breakfasts, dinners and get-togethers. My last memory of Ron was when I "sort of" helped him install eavestroughs at my son Michael's house. An excellent job that will always be a Ron reminder when we visit Michael and his family. A perfect video tribute. That smiling face and sense of humour will be a lasting memory.  Our sincerest condolences Susan, Rebecca and Ashley. We look forward to the day when we can meet to celebrate Ron’s memory. Beautiful video. You can clearly see Ron's love for Susan and his daughters in so many of the photos! And such a magic smile. I was a member of the Saturday morning golf group for a number of years and always enjoyed Ron's company immensely. For a few years, there were typically just 4 of us every Saturday but as the group grew to 8 and even more, I always hoped when I drove out to Blumberg that I would be in a group with Ron that morning. He was funny, down to earth and very genuine. Looking at his photo here and watching the videos makes me smile. He was a wonderful man and I'm very glad I got to spend a whole lot of Saturday mornings with Ron. My sincere condolences to Susan, his daughters and the rest of his family and friends. Rest in peace, my friend.  Rick McGregor

Mr. Henderson waa my Grade 8 Science Teacher at GWMS. He was patient, caring and compassionate. He taught me to look at the whole picture before making assumptions and going with my gut or what others suggested.  I'm always reminded when anyone mentions a hair cut, he always asked if they were only getting 1 hair cut? He always cuckled and shared a smile. So jovial, always. Rest in Peace Sir, Antonio Smith

It's unfortunate that we saw him as a "teacher" before we ever saw him as a person....he was a special man who touched many lives.

He was always smiling and made us laugh every day. He was one of those people who had a gift for teaching!  My sincere condolences to his family and friends. What and absolute legend Mr Henderson was!  An incredible teacher that seemed more like a smart big brother helping you learn things.   I literally just taught my kids about the sunrise and sunset changes this time a year.   This was all Mr Henderson,  he was an absolute favorite, and a wonderful man.   My condolences to his family and friends.  May he play a round every day!!🏌‍♂️

Mr Henderson was one of my all time favourites. He taught me Grade 6 at Linwood School. I sometimes work at Linwood School now, and Room 19 and the science lab bring back so many great memories of that year. May your family find comfort in this time. ❤

He was my Grade 8 science teacher, at George Waters Middle School.   Was the perfect person to teach science, even had the Einstein hair due :D. Plus a very high level of enthusiasm, made it fun to learn. R.I.P Mr. Henderson

There was one time I was skipping class with my friend and we got caught by a teacher. We were brought back to Mr Henderson’s and he told the teacher that we were running an errand for him. Mr. Henderson wasn’t a snitch. Total homie.

Dear Susan and family. I taught with Ron in 1979 at Stevenson School. This was my first year as a teacher. I remember spending many noon hours with Ron, Ric W and Al D playing HORSE in the gym. They made my first year of teaching very enjoyable. I saw Ron sporadically during our teaching careers. He always remembered me and made time to say hi. I have nothing but good memories of Ron.  I trust that time will ease the pain of your loss and leave you with a lifetime of great memories.   Brent Corrigan

Dear Susan and family. We were saddened to hear of Ron's passing. He was my age and we spent a lot of time together during the summer months when we were growing up. This picture of him is the perfect one to bring out the kind of person he was. Kathy and I have been talking about the Steiner/Henderson get togethers we used to have and how we should get together again soon. Not to play ball just to have a good old fashioned picnic and visit! Maybe Ron's passing will enable us to do that and share memories. Thinking of you all, Jim & Trudy Steiner
