Ron Henderson
RON HENDERSON
June 11, 1948 – March 29, 2021
Ronald Henderson passed away in the Grace General Hospital on March 29, 2021, after a year-long battle with cancer, surrounded by his wife and daughters.
Born in Kenora, Ron spent his early years in Whitemouth before the family moved to Portage la Prairie. He worked on construction with his older brother Lyle and for a while, owned a construction business. After graduating from the University of Manitoba, Ron taught at various schools, including Linwood, Stevenson-Britannia, Hedges and George Waters. He enjoyed coaching basketball and made several lifelong friends during this time. Ron remained interested in the world of mechanics his whole life. Before he passed, he had fixed up a 1966 Mustang convertible while attaching a new engine to his wife’s rototiller. Ron also enjoyed renovating homes. The house he lived in with his wife, Susan, and two daughters, Ashley and Rebecca, in Charleswood proved to be a real task in imagination.
The home they created for their children included a spacious back yard filled with adventure, hard work and beautiful memories. People always filled their home, whether it was his daughters’ school friends or the neighbours who grew to know Ron from his time puttering around the yard and helping others find solutions for yard work. Not to mention the weekly dinners with their neighbours, the Penners and Murrays, where he would entertain with his quirky sense of humour and barbecued delights. Even his daughter’s friends grew to know Ron as an iconic presence in the area, remembering his amusement at their antics and always game to add to their shenanigans.
Ron loved his daughters, Rebecca, Ashley and Tre. Their accomplishments made him very proud, and he filled the basement with their artwork, report cards and pictures. Still, Ron loved his wife more than anything. For almost 45 years, Ron and Susan travelled the world together. They went to Paris, London, Cairo, Luxor, Havana, George Town and Maui—to name a few. A WWII (self-described) historian, Ron even visited the Normandy landings on the coast of France, a lifelong dream of his. Ron loved to be active and took every chance he had to downhill ski, water ski and windsurf. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing golf with a close group of friends and displaying his pool skills in snooker at the Army and Navy on Portage with long time pool partner Ric. Ron also enjoyed camping, and the family went on several trips during the summer holidays to Asessippi, Mount Rushmore, Banff and Rushing River.
Ron leaves his wife Susan; daughters, Rebecca, Ashley, Tre, and family; brothers, Lyle (Sylvia), Keith (Sharon), Joe (Betty), Greg (Kathy), and Richard (Dian); sisters, Lois and Kathy; brother-in-law Brian (Maggie); and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to their close friend Bev, for her unending support during this time.
Ron has travelled one last time to the other side, where his family is sure he’s finding various tasks and jobs to complete like he once did in life. A celebration of Ron’s life is being planned for June 2021, when we are safely able to come together. In the meantime, Ron's family kindly requests that his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above.
