SANDRA JEAN HLUSHKO

(née BLENDER)

February 11, 1960 - May 10, 2022

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Sandra (Sandy) Jean Hlushko (née Blender) announces her passing on May 10, 2022 at the age of 62 years.

Sandra will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her dear husband of 37 years, Ed, her two daughters Melissa (Craig), and Kaela-Mae (Scott), her two treasured grandsons, Jack and Silas, as well as all the special pets in her life, Bear, Moose and Olive. Sandra is survived by her siblings Raymond (Debbie), Merv, Debbie (Brian), brother-in-law; Fred (Laura) and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, relatives, and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Bill and Mary Blender and her parents-in-law Steve and Florence Hlushko.

Sandra was born and grew up on a farm near Endeavour, Saskatchewan. This is where Sandra learned the value of hard work. She attended school in Endeavour and Sturgis, Saskatchewan. After graduating, Sandra moved to Winnipeg, where she met and married her loving husband, Ed in 1985. While busy raising their two beautiful and precious daughters, Sandra obtained (with honors) a Health Care Aide Certificate. This started her career in Health Care. Sandra worked at Deer Lodge Centre for 24 years, retiring in 2019. She found the work rewarding and said it was a privilege to care for others. She loved her patients and formed many meaningful and special relationships with them.

Sandra was a person with lots of energy, talents, and passions. She was creative, organized, kind and a great friend. Sandra was talented at sewing, knitting, gardening, decorating, cooking and entertaining. Sandra enjoyed life and looked at it in a positive and optimistic way. She loved adventure, was spontaneous and always willing to try new challenges. Sandra, Ed and their family enjoyed extensive travels throughout her life. Sandra made each holiday (especially Halloween) a special event by decorating and going “all out”! She enjoyed entertaining and opened their house to family and friends with good food, cards and lots of fun times. Her greatest passion of all were her grandsons Jack and Silas who brought her so much joy and laughter.

Sandra leaves special memories for each person she touched in her life. “When we lose someone, we must learn not to live without them, but to live with the love they left behind.”

A celebration of Sandra’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on June 1, 2022 at 603 Wellington Crescent (Unitarian Church) at Academy Road. A private family graveside service will be held in Saskatchewan at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sandra’s name to Palliative Manitoba by clicking here.

Sandra's family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

We are so sorry for your loss.  Sandra ( with Ed right beside her) never missed saying "Hello" and a little visit when they were visiting Saskatchewan, no matter how busy and full the function was.  Her warm hug, smile, laughter and conversations will be missed. RIP.  Peter & Karen  German

Sandra was such a lover of life. How I envied her happy disposition. She was so lucky to have Ed, who loved her more than anything, and Melissa and Kaela Mae who completed that circle of life for her. May your memories of her love carry you through each and every day.  How we will miss you dear girl.  Cheryl Strelezki

Sandy was consistently vibrant, joyful, and had a very special way of bringing out the playful, fun side of everyone who had the honor to be near her. She approached everything she encountered with confidence and bravery. We are so lucky that she lives on through her beautiful daughters.

Sandra was a childhood friend and neighbour and although our lives took us to different parts of the country, the childhood memories remain dear to my heart. R.I.P. dear friend.

I met Sandy through her husband Ed whom I worked with. Sandy & her daughter Kaele joined me on one of my mission teams to Zambia, Africa, where I got to know her and saw her compassion for people. I have fond memories of our short time together. My heart felt condolences to Ed and the girls and all their family.
