MICHAEL (MIKE) HOFFER

July 6, 1945 – February 28, 2020

It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Mike, aged 74, on February 28, 2020 in the Concordia Hospital with his son Kelly by his side.

Mike is survived by his son Kelly (Shauna); daughter Shannon (Yamil); grandchildren Kali, Taylor, Kaiden, and Mason; brothers Dave, Elie, and Joe; and sisters Mary and Rebecca. He is predeceased by his parents Zacharias and Maria Hofer and brothers Jake, Zack, Ben, and John.

Mike was born near Elie, Manitoba and grew up in a rural farming community. In his early 20’s he moved to Winnipeg to attended Red River Community College, becoming an Electrician. He worked many jobs in those early years, but most will remember him from Canadian Mid-West Electric, which he started in the mid 1970’s and ran till the last few years of his life.

Mike married Reina Slyker and they had two children Kelly and Shannon. He also had four grandchildren Taylor and Kali (Kelly) and Kaiden and Mason (Shannon).

Mike had many loves in life, in his early years he was a very passionate big-game hunter and gun enthusiast. He often told stories of his highly skilled long distant shots he made on game and targets and even talked about the time he shot a duck flying overhead with a .22 that landed at his brother’s feet. He did like a good story!!  He loved the outdoors enjoyed camping, fishing and boating along with water skiing.  He spent many hours out on the water pulling skiers around with his boat. His biggest passion, and what he was most proud of, was his work. He took immense pride in being able to repair what most could not.

Mike also loved animals, especially dogs, he had two Rottweiler’s, Dakota and Zoey that he was very fond of and still talked about regularly even though they had been gone for a number of years.

Mike loved a good joke and had a tremendous mustached laugh, and for those that knew him well, if he broke out the buckled over knee slapper, they knew they had told a good one!!

Mike had a tremendous heart and would help anyone in need in any way he could. He was truly the kind of guy that would give you shirt off his back. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Mikes family would like to thank all the staff at the Concordia Hospital that helped take care of him while he was there.

About 14 months ago, our family organized a 90th Birthday celebration for our mom, Anne Hofer.  Thanks to our Uncle Dave, both Mike and Mary were able to attend this milestone birthday.  We miss you Uncle Mike. RIP. ❤

In the late 80's, Uncle Mike, along with Kelly and Shannon traveled to BC to spend vacation time with Elie, Brit, Gigi and Ira. Tim and I brought our zodiac and off we went from Vancouver on BC ferries, heading for Port Alberni and eventually to Tofino on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. On the way, we stopped by Port Alberni taking a much needed break to cool off and climb the rocks of the Somass River on the Pacific Rim Highway. On another trip, Mike joined us on a ski trip to one of the Local Ski Resorts on the North Shore of Vancouver BC. I have very fond memories of our trips and cherish the precious time I spent with Mike, Elie and cousins. Mike, you will be missed, Hugs, Jan & Tim Scheuer

Last December my Uncle Mike was asked to fix the bathtub tap at my sister Maria's house.  Uncle Mike asked his brother Dave to help him.  When they arrived at the house, both of them had great big smiles on their faces, ready to help.  I served them coffee and they went to work.  They needed parts and together, drove to hardware stores for the parts and pieces to fix the tap.  While working, I took this priceless photo of them; tools in hand, coffee cups on the counter and big grins on their faces.  The lighting in the bathroom wasn't bright enough for Uncle Mike.  He came prepared and wore a headlamp.  That's Uncle Mike.  To top it off, a few days later my Uncles Mike and Dave brought Chinese beef and broccoli dinner to my sister Maria's house.  Such generous acts of kindness.  You can't get better than that! I will miss you Uncle Mike.

I have good memories of uncle Mike and my favorite ones were on the golf coarse. we both played badly but it sure was fun. Mike didn't take himself seriously on the coarse and we laughed an awful lot. when we played really bad, we would stop for a schnapps break. The last time we played together was 3 years ago in Winnipeg with cousin Rob. Rob is such a mellow golfer but even he needed a couple of schnapps breaks because of how awful we played. Too much fun and will never forget him.
