DORIS IRENE HOLMES

November 28, 1932 - September 20, 2024

Our dear Mom, Grandma, and Great-Grandma Doris Irene Holmes passed away on September 20th at Seven Oaks Hospital at the age of 91.

Doris was born to James Oliver Freedy and Eleanora Charlotte Fisher in Unity, SK, and lived in Cutknife for the first five years of her life. She then moved to Winnipeg, where she grew up in EK with five brothers and sisters. She married Bernard Holmes in 1951.

Doris was employed by the Provincial Government in various departments and was very involved with the MGEU, including being on the Board of Directors, of which she took great pride. Doris was pro-union and a vocal advocate for workers’--particularly women’s—rights.

Doris enjoyed her cottage at Malachi, ON, for 40 years with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Malachi was always a special place for Doris and her family.

Doris spent her final years at Dakota House, where she made new friends, especially Barbara and Yolande. She loved her YMCA group.

Doris was predeceased by her son, Ronald Holmes; her infant son, Thomas James; four of her siblings; and, former spouse Bernard. She is survived by her children, Betty (Ron) Laurencelle, Bruce, Ian, and Leslie (Edward) Fitzpatrick; her grandchildren, Alyson, Sarah, Rosanne, Susanne, Shannon, Ryan, Taylor, Jillian, and Josie; her great-grandchildren, Connor, Lauren, Esme, Hayden, Levi, Micah, Mateo, Severin, Phoenix, Rhea, Bear, Evren, MorningStar, and Lachlan; her brother, James; and several nieces and nephews.

Mom was the matriarch of our family and she will be greatly missed. Thank you to the staff at the Grace and Seven Oaks Hospitals for their care and compassion.

Respecting Doris’ wishes, a private family gathering will be held to celebrate her long life.

Doris’ family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I met Doris at the MGEU where I worked for 25 years. She was an active member and I really enjoyed seeing her whenever she came to the office. Doris always found time to stop by my desk & have a chat. She was a warm & wonderful person who I also shared my birthday with. We used to joke about being birthday twins. I have very fond memories of Doris. She was one of those people that everyone liked. May she rest in Paradise.

Doris was a member of the YMCA Adult Day Program for the past 8years, she had a wonderful personality and a laugh that would get everyone going. She loved all our adventures and was keen to come along wherever we ventured. She was always so kind and fun and always asked how my children were and genuinely cared for all the members. We miss her greatly at program and send our deepest condolences to all her family and friends.

I met Doris for the first time at an Area Directors meeting. I was very new to the role but Doris immediately took me under her wing and patiently explained everything to me. I credit her with being the reason I stayed on to also become a Board Member. She was such a wise and gracious woman. The last time I saw her was at an MGEU members breakfast ( it was one we planned to stay in touch) I was thrilled to see her then. She always made me feel like family...a gift that she gave so freely of. May God bless her soul and wrap His arms around her so she would have everlasting peace and move forward to see the family members she lost in prior years. She was one great woman and to know her was to love her.🥲❤️🙏😇🥰
