DONALD HORBAN

March 13, 1943 - August 6, 2023

On August 6, 2023 Reverend Donald Horban passed away peacefully with family at his side. Donald was born in Bonnyville, Alberta on March 13, 1943 to Bill and Elsie Horban. The family moved to Oshawa, Ontario when he was 3 years old. Donald became a born-again Christian at the age of 17, and he had a great passion to introduce people to Christ. From 1963 to 1965 he attended Living Word Bible College in Swan River, Manitoba where he met the love of his life Darlene Nemetchek. They married on August 21, 1965, and he said that marrying her was the best thing that ever happened to him.

In 1966 they moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario where Donald accepted the position of pastor at Living Word Tabernacle. He also worked as an electrician first at the Port Arthur Shipyards, for the Canadian Pacific Railway and then the Canadian National Railway to supplement his income. His ministry was largely visiting the poor, needy, disadvantaged families and many hospital visits. There were many answers to prayer.

Donald and Darlene were blessed with 3 daughters, Nancy, Lisa, and Christine, while living in Thunder Bay, and he loved them very much. Some of the activities he enjoyed doing with his family included fishing, camping, cross country skiing, blueberry picking, and trips to the A&W drive in. Donald also loved sharing his passion for fishing with young people from the church, and had many fond memories of events and gatherings with the congregation during his tenure.

In 1988 CNR transferred Donald to Winnipeg, where he also pastored at Living Word Temple from 1990 to 1995. He had a love for the people of Winnipeg’s North End, and he & Darlene would regularly visit families in the neighbourhood. He had a compassion for those in need, and would regularly help people in any way he was able to.

In 1995 he accepted the position as president of Living Word Ministries in Swan River, Manitoba, where he served in that position until retiring in 2010. There he was also heavily involved with ministering to the first nations people. He had a love for Israel, visiting 7 times, 5 of which he was the tour host. He and Darlene moved back to Winnipeg where he once again pastored at Living Word Temple from 2010 to 2012.

Throughout his life, Donald had a passion for sharing the gospel and leading people to a personal relationship with Christ. He cared for those he knew, and regularly witnessed to friends and neighbours. He had the privilege of seeing some of them come to Christ and encouraged them in their Christian walk.

Rosie, his pet dog, was his faithful and constant companion and his fourth daughter. One of Donald’s favourite things to do was playing rounds of Uno with his grandchildren Halina, Taylor, Ava, and Ethan. He will forever be remembered for his card shufflers and his love of playing, the game with them. Donald and Ethan also shared a love of all things trains. Taylor and him enjoyed watching episodes of Columbo together whenever he visited, and started her love of the show.

Donald is predeceased by his parents, and his sisters Margaret, Irene & Diane. Left to mourn his passing are his loving wife of 58 years Darlene, his daughters Nancy, Lisa (Roland) & Christine, and his beloved grandchildren Halina, Taylor, Ava and Ethan.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Monday August 14, 2023 at 603 Wellington Crescent in Winnipeg.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Pine River Evangelical Church or Cancer Care Manitoba.

A big thank you to Dr. Prinsloo and the doctors and staff at Grace Hospital.

It was quite by accident and not at all what we anticipated to find for Pastor Don Horban! We have been thinking about him and Darlene for some time now wondering where they living and how they were doing? So tonight we got on our computer and typed in his name and were saddened to see his obituary.  My husband and I had the privilege and joy to go on his last trip to Israel with Don and Darlene and 20+ other people whom we didn't know at the start of the trip, however; we parted in tears as in ten days we all became family!  It was a very rewarding time to be with Don and Darlene in Israel and his knowledge of the Bible and the various places we visited. Pastor Horban baptized both Ron and I in the Jordan River that was only one of the many highlights of our trip in 2010. May God be your peace and comfort, Darlene as you grieve the loss of your husband but we know we will meet again, so we rejoice in the hope God gave us!

Reba and I give our condolences to Darlene and the family.  It has been a pleasure knowing you both.  Don Horban lived in the same village as us, in Courtice, Ontario when we were young.  His mother would drive us kids and mom, when she could get away, to Sunday School and church at the Ukrainian Pentecostal Church in Oshawa, Ontario.  This led to the salvation of the family.      I learned that Don was President of the Living Word Bible College in Swan River, Manitoba.  Immediately I applied to teach there and was accepted a few days later in 2008.       One day Don called to invite me to go visit Uncle Tim with him.  Little did I  realize it was Tim Horton's he was referring to.  Many a time we had good fellowship there, besides at the college.        Don was friendly, firm, and had a good sense of humour.  He was an excellent leader at the College and earned the respect of faculty, students, and community.  He also had a positive impact on the churches under his jurisdiction which included First Nations people.      We miss Don, but know that one day soon we will see him in glory with Christ our Redeemer. love and prayers Richard and Reba Raczkowski

My wife and I had the extreme pleasure of getting to know Don, and his lovely wife Darlene while we were neighbours, living in River heights. Don and I would very often meet in our back lane for chats, but since we moved away from the city, just over a year ago, Don and I continued our friendship through e-mails and phone calls and I truly believe that we learned a great deal from each other. As many of you probably know, Don was quite a religious man, and he and I had a multitude of conversations surrounding God, and the gospel, if you will. I remember one of these instances when I had sent Don a video that I had discovered regarding 'Portals'. It was of a gentleman who looked like he was in a hotel room. He used a blue light that he had placed on the bed and with the use of his cell phone and a laptop, he says he was able to use frequencies to create a 'portal' between point A and point B. I found it interesting and quite telling of just what a special man Don was/is. I thought after seeing the video I sent him, he might have shied away from engaging in talking about such an incredible occurrence, but not Don. I learned that his mind was wide-open to immense possibilities and beliefs that perhaps that's what drew us together as friends. I remember him saying that the Lord has been using 'portals' for years, and suggested that God's disciples would be in one part of the Country in the morning and then be in a different part of the Country/World the very same day, and attributed their travels to 'portals' being used. Don was also a very generous man as he on more than a couple of occasions would bring his snow-blower across the back lane and help  me with the snow removal, even when maybe he shouldn't have been. I'm happy I was able to have a short visit during his stay at The Misrecordia Hospital, but truly wish he were still here with us, and yet happy for his relief of pain and the Joy I hope he feels being in God's Kingdom. I will miss him, dearly, but will continue to reminisce about our time and conversations together. Rest easy. my friend, and should you feel the need to want to visit, please don't hesitate. I also hope that Darlene stays in touch with us. God Bless ! Hugs !
