DOROTHY ALICE HORNAN

(née HALCROW)

March 1, 1946 - July 21, 2021

With heavy hearts, we announce our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother has passed away at the age of 75 years.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband James in 2018; her 7 older brothers; and her parents, Archie and Alice Halcrow. She is survived by her children, Gordon (Velvet); Bobbie, Caroline (Bryan), Geraldine, and Frances (Kevin); her grandchildren, Rebecca, Joshua, Jeremy, Korie, Christopher, Katherine, Gage, Halley, Danielle, Rogan, Seth, Kelsey, Aaron, and Bryce; their partners and children, and her extended family.

Dorothy was born in Cross Lake, the youngest and only daughter of eight children. She was affectionately known as Tootsie Halcrow to all her family and friends. Her first language was Cree and would happily converse fluently with her Cross Lake and Wabowden families.

Dorothy was a Residential School survivor, and although she suffered greatly, her life was not in vain. She loved her family deeply and did what she could for them. The neighbourhood children said she made the best bannock on the block, she sewed the best Halloween costumes for her children, and made all her grand babies their traditional baby hammock and rocked them to sleep.

Dorothy married James Hornan in 1966 and raised her family in Thompson. They retired in Oakbank in 1997 where she resided until her health deteriorated. She then entered the PCH in early 2018 until her passing. She would want everyone to know she is no longer in pain and is now reunited with her husband and brothers.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at River Park Gardens PCH for the exceptional care Dorothy received.

Please take a few moments and remember Dorothy, the children that have been found, still to be found, the residential school survivors, and all the families who continue to be affected.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Dorothy’s memory to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society, or the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund.

Due to COVID restrictions, a private Celebration of Life will be held. For those who wish to attend the burial service, please join the family at Green Acres Cemetery, Hwy #1 East at Navin Road at 2:00 pm Monday, July 26, 2021.

My condolences to the entire Hornan family. Our families spent many weekends camping and fishing together when we were growing up. I always kept in touch with Dorothy and Jim over the years. And always had a good laugh. Hornan family find comfort in the memories and know they are now reunited. Love George

My condolences to Caroline and family.  My time knowing Dorothy was only a Few years but Dorthy was always so kind to me.  Jim and Dorothy always had a spare room for us to stay overnight. Dorothy talked about her family and many grand children and great grandchildren. Many stories from the north as well, she use to know one of my friends mom as a child she told me. Such a small world!   She liked when we would bring her turtle fridge magnets from out family trips.  Rest In Peace Dorothy.  Reunite with your family and Jim.    Bryan Sytnick Valley River Manitoba

I offer my condolences and prayers to the family. I was honoured to be her chaplain at River Park Gardens PCH for about a year. Her deep faith and vibrant spirituality inspired me and my faith. She was an elder of mine and I learned from her, just as I offered her prayer and encouragement as she shared her own struggles. Now she has been raised on the wings of an eagle, so free and at peace, at one with her Creator. I will miss her. - Lilli Williams

We knew Dorothy and her husband Jim for many years from Thompson and then Winnipeg. We had some good visits with them and always a laugh or two. So sorry they are both gone-we will miss them. Larry and Jan Gallagher

This one time when when we were on our way to Wabowden, my mom amd Tootsie were going to the Halloween Social.  We were almost to Wabowden junction and she said something like this "Audrey there's a horse standing in the ditch there, stop, it might have gotten loose  does it ever have big ears!".  When we turned around to look at the "horse", it was actually a moose.  One of many memories I remember from when I was younger as Tootsie and my mom used to slend a lot of time together.  My sincere condolences to all the family, Love Charm.
