MURIEL LOUISE HOTEL

(née AUSTIN)

November 28, 1929 – January 23, 2020

Muriel passed away peacefully in the St. Boniface General Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, after a long battle with ALS.

Muriel was born in Glossop, Manitoba, in 1929, one of six children of Charles and Mable Austin.  She is predeceased by her parents and siblings Bert, Hazel Delgarno, Edna Hall, and Marie Austin. Muriel is survived by (George) Ralph Hotel, her husband of 67 years, and their children; Vic (Deb Magnusson), Danny (Katrina), and Tracy Stahl; sister Sandra (Dennis) Hosfield of Kenora as well as five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Muriel was raised in Strathclair and then left to attend nursing school.  She was quite proud of that accomplishment and it served her and her family well throughout the upbringing of her family.  It was back in Strathclair, where Muriel and Ralph met.  They were married in 1953 and settled in Dauphin where all the children were born.  Ralph was transferred to Winnipeg in 1961, so they bought a new house and moved into the city.  Muriel worked at a nearby school for a number of years once her stay-at-home years had transpired.

Muriel enjoyed many years of both golfing and bowling.  She and Ralph traveled to Hawaii a few times and family heard many stories surrounding those trips.  Once Ralph retired from MTS, they enjoyed many San Antonio golfing trips together along with other golfing couples.  She began golfing at the Canoe Club and later made her way to St Boniface Golf and Country Club.  There she enjoyed many years of friendly competitions within the Ladies Golf League.  She was part of the executive, over numerous seasons, and enjoyed it immensely!

While no cure was available, she had great support from the ALS Society of Manitoba, the Motor Neuron Disease Clinic (Deer Lodge) and the WRHA.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the ALS Society of Manitoba, 2A – 1717 Dublin Ave, Winnipeg, MB, R3H 0H2.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no public services.

I am so sorry to hear of Muriel's passing.  Although the Winstones and Hotels seem to have lost touch with each other over the years, the Hotels were good friends for many, many years.  ALS is difficult to deal with, and to watch a loved one deal with.  My thoughts are with you.  Take care. Reed Winstone (Bob & Ruth's youngest).

So sorry to learn of Muriel’s passing.  I have many fond memories of golfing with her at the Canoe Club and later St. Boniface Golf Club. She was my partner and the person who introduced me to  the ladies Nassau golf league. She will be missed. Condolences to the family.
