LORRAINE ANNIE HOULE

(née BRUYERE)

February 20, 1935 –June 21, 2022

It is with deep sorrow and much love, we announce that Lorraine passed away peacefully on June 21, 2022, at the Health Sciences Centre, at the age of 87 years.

Lorraine is predeceased by her father William and mother Angele Bruyere; siblings, Joe, Ron, Bert, Lou, Tony, Alma, and Rose; and her children Claudette, Arnold, and Harold. She is survived by her children, Randall Charles (Terri), Gisele, Cheryl and Venessa; grandchildren Quantia (Charlie), Danielle, Rachel, Matthew and Sasha; great grandchildren, siblings; extended family and friends.

Born in Fort Alexander, Sagkeeng in 1935, she was the eldest daughter to William and Angele Bruyere. Lorraine attended Fort Alexander residential school starting at the age of 4 years old in 1939, and later La Bret, Saskatchewan where she completed high school. In 1951, she came to live in Winnipeg, and worked in a sewing factory before getting married in 1959.

She raised her teenage and younger children as a single parent and managed to purchase a house in 1978 so the family would never have to feel housing insecurity or experience poor living conditions as a low-income Indigenous family. Owning a home was an important goal as she had struggled finding places to rent, and many places she had rented were sub-standard. They were run down or could barely accommodate a large family in the 60's and 70's.

In the early 1980’s, she returned to university and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree and soon began work with the province of Manitoba. She worked as a home care aide level 3 until she retired. As a residential school survivor, Lorraine grew up in a catholic residential school and remained a catholic all her life. She gave generously to various charities

Lorraine courageously endured a long illness and went to dialysis for over 12 years. She was a resilient and courageous person. She will be greatly missed.

Lorraine's family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

A celebration of her life will be held 11:00 am, Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at 603 Wellington Crescent at Academy Road (Unitarian Church).

My beautiful mother, I’m so happy that you have found peace and I will see you again someday. Love from myself, Sasha and Matthew.

I knew her when I worked at the Dialysis center. In the waiting room, Richard, one of the other patients, used to sit with her and shamelessly flirt with her in an overblown style, always making her smile and laugh.  Everyone wanted to make her day, and would chat with her and help her. One of the last times I was there, a driver had come to pick her up and was chatting with her and making her happy. I stood at the doorway as they walked out arm in arm and I told him in a loud voice to make sure he had her home at a decent hour, which got her to smile and laugh. Richard predeceased her, and the driver has since retired, but I'm so glad that they were able to make her day so many times.
