Jim House
JAMES “JIM” DUNCAN HOUSE, PHD
December 7, 1966 – September 10, 2024
James “Jim” Duncan House, PhD, FCNS-SCN, 57 of Winnipeg, MB passed away peacefully on September 10th, 2024.
He was a Professor and former Head of Food & Human Nutritional Science at the University of Manitoba and most recently appointed Manitoba Strategic Research Chair in Sustainable Protein. He was also past President of the Canadian Nutrition Society/Société Canadienne de Nutrition.
Jim was born on December 7th, 1966 in St Thomas, ON and educated at Guelph University for both a BSc and PhD in Animal Science, before completing his post doctoral work at Memorial University of Newfoundland and finally accepting a tenured position at The University of Manitoba.
He is predeceased by his parents, Judy (née Elliott) and Lucius “Lou” House.
Jim was the beloved husband of Aileen (née McCann); and adoring father of Meara. He is survived by his siblings, Sheilah (Martin), Michael (Donna), Jhhn (Louise), and Tom (Staci); his brothers and sisters in law, David (Marg) and Peter (Aruna); His nieces and nephews, Ellen (Stefan), Sonia (Michael), Shannon, Monica, Meredith (Jack), Nathan, Jennifer (Gabe), Michael, Connor (Meghan), and Heather; as well as his Mother In Law Ann.
Jim’s awards and accomplishments were many and it would be easy to assume that he was a serious man with little time for frivolity. Nothing could be further from the truth. Jim found joy and delight in every element of living. He was the easiest company, with a ready smile and vivid sense of humour. His infectious laugh will be missed always. Jim was a true friend to everyone he met. There are friends and family around the world that feel such a sense of loss at his passing.
Hearing Jim sing was a true pleasure, he enjoyed decades with The Bison Men’s Chorus and his solos ranged from the ridiculous to the sublime. Singing Fields of Athenry in Ireland surrounded by family was a highlight for those present. His profound love of music and art were a lovely counterbalance to his pursuit of scientific advancement.
Jim never lost hope throughout his battle and if love had been enough to save him, he would be with us still. We, those that knew him best, are comforted in our grief as we understand that the depth of our sorrow is a testament to the love he shared so freely during his lifetime. We know we are the luckiest people to have had such a beautiful soul grace our lives.
We are grateful for his time with us, however short it felt. His legacy will live on in his work and family. The lives he has touched are many and varied, and he left everyone better for having known him.
A celebration of life will take place at 5:30pm on Monday, October 7th, in the Manitoba Room at The University of Manitoba to give us time to prepare a fitting tribute for someone as rare and precious as Jim. Instead of flowers we are organizing a scholarship/award in his honour, details will be available at the service.
The family expresses gratitude to all the remarkable healthcare workers who have dedicated their lives to helping others, you were there with us every step of our journey.
Jim’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page. We also encourage everyone with memories to share to email us dr.house.memories@gmail.com.

My sympathies to the family. I took a class in which Dr. House taught some of the lectures and really enjoyed it. He was very gifted at explaining difficult subjects. I also visited his lab briefly as part of my M.Sc. program and was grateful to have the opportunity to learn from him. He was always very kind and supportive and incredibly knowledgeable.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Jim. His passing will leave hug gaps in many lives, including the research community where he was so revered. I fondly remember Jim being in demand as a back up singer at the CNS karaoke. I'll try to share the video. Rest in Peace Jim.

Jim's fun-loving, positive, and humble spirit were a mainstay in my highschool crew. Whether hanging out on the football field, the chem lab or in the halls, life got better when the "House Boys" were around. My heart goes out to all of his family and the Scrocchis with some hugs for those I have the joy of knowing more closely.

Thinking of Jim brings back a flood of fun-loving high school memories. I will forever remember the mischievous twinkle in Jim's eye as we all laughed deeply. Always good for a giggle! My thoughts are with Thom and Jim's family❤️ Karen

I am so deeply saddened by Jim's passing. Jim and I have worked closely for the last 10 years thanks to his great commitment and contributions to the Canadian Nutrition Society and the greater field of nutrition. In my 30+ years working with not-for-profit organizations, Jim has had one of the greatest impacts on me. It became evident to me early in my role with CNS that Jim was a giant in our field - his immense knowledge, his vision, his integrity, his commitment to trainees, the respect he garnered by so many colleagues and collaborators, his talent as a scientist, and his willingness to always take time and to give all he had- which was so much. I am so grateful for having met him, and feel so privileged to have had the opportunity to work so closely with him. He was a mentor and a friend - and he always made me want to keep pushing forward and keep doing better. The loss that I have been feeling is immense - and my heart goes out to so many other colleagues and friends, and in particular his family - who are all grieving a person who had made such an impact and has been taken from us too soon. We will miss that beautiful smile, the hearty laugh, his sense of humour, his genuineness and his ability to make anyone around him feel comfortable and noticed. I will never forget Jim.

Many of us that are members of the American Oil Chemists Society had the great fortune to have interacted and collaborated with Jim over the time he was in the Society. Jim and his team at the Univ of Manitoba "led the way" in multiple areas of human nutrition and protein ingredient science over many years. Jim's collaborative nature was cleraly evident time and time again, and the world quite simply is better for it. His leadership in the particular area of the human protein nutrition led to the improvement of fundamental methods for how protein quality is determined for protein ingredients and foods used from infants to the elderly, all over the world. The parents of countless children can go to sleep every night knowing full well that quality methods were used in making the foods that nourish them at every meal based on JIm's tireless commitent to "doing the right things and doing them right."
Beyond Jim's leadership at the Univ of Manitoba, he was a tremendous mentor for scientists all over the world, young and old. His ebullient demeanor, coupled with his insistence on rigorous science , made for a terrific example for countless scientists in the Society and we were all the better for it.
Jim was taken far too soon and had so more more to give to the scientific community that he served so well, and i'm sure his community in Winnipeg and his family too. Our thoughts are with all of them on this very sad day and will be in the days to come.

Jim was the bar we all needed to try and strive to be like in the BP laboratory that spanned Guelph-Toronto and then Alberta-Toronto. We learned about him early and then when I got to meet him it was like meeting a rock star! I was intimidated.
He immediately made me feel comfortable and from that point forward was always inviting and supportive of everything I ever brought to him.
Knowing him made other scientists feel more capable. To meet his family made you want to be a better partner and a better parent. Being his friend made you want to be a better friend. Knowing him made you want to try so much harder to be better, to be more like him.
I can only imagine though that the powers that be must have needed a new front man for their band, someone to lead the people and inspire them with his song, love, laughter and hope. I will miss him.

I remember meeting Jim in person for the first time at an ILSI meeting in Washington DC and I recall being so impressed that a scientist with his reputation and status was so kind and humble. Our common research interests brought us together over emails, virtual meetings and drafting manuscripts over the past number of years. It was a pleasure working with him - he was a great listener and always considered everyone's input. He was gracious and always thoughtful when presenting his viewpoints, which were always spot on. I know his colleagues and mentees approciated his ability to share his knowledge and encourage their own successes. He amazed me with his indefatigable energy for research, education and giving back to the scientific community.. He will be sorely missed by the research community and humanity in general. May his kind soul continue to inspire us to be better scientists and humans.

I began my Ph.D. work in Dr. House's lab at the University of Manitoba last fall, and I had only known him for a year. But those who know Dr. House understand how kind, patient, nice, and lovely he was, regardless of the length of time one knew him. When I first heard the news, I couldn't believe it. I kept expecting someone from the department to email me and say that he would be coming to the lab next week. I still can't believe that he's gone. I feel incredibly unlucky and sad that I didn't have the chance to complete my Ph.D. under his mentorship and guidance. Nevertheless, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with such a kind-hearted person, even if it was only for a short time. My only hope now is to continue the work I started with him in a way that would make him proud if he were here. Rest in Peace, Dr. House. You will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

My sincere condolences to Aileen, Meara and the rest of the family. Jim and I have been strong collaborators for the last 15 years and have shared many laughs together. More than just a collaborator, Jim was a great mentor to me, and close friend. We always had lively discussions, which rarely involved science. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

I’m deeply saddened to learn of Dr. House’s passing today. He was more than just my graduate studies supervisor at the University of Manitoba—he was a mentor, a guide, and a remarkably patient and kind person. Dr. House had an incredible ability to teach, offering insights and wisdom that shaped not only my academic journey but my personal growth as well. The training and knowledge I gained from him have been invaluable, and I’ll always be grateful. His impact on my life is something I will carry with me forever. Rest in peace, Dr. House. You will be deeply missed.

My condolences. Jim will be missed. During our PhD's in Guelph, Jim and I shared an office, but Jim was mostly working hard in Ron Ball's lab, and not so much in our office. Still, we interacted a lot. We met again when I came for the job interview at the University of Manitoba and Jim took me for dinner at the Forks. He told me that University of Manitoba is a good place for Guelph graduates like us, He was so right.

Jim was a wonderful colleague and friend. Besides being a
outstanding academic he served as Deparment Head with great distinction. His friendly disposition and manner put you at ease when you approached. him. Jim was a great problem solver. As Associate Dean it was pleasure working with him.
He will be sorely missed by all his colleagues and I for one,
am eternally grateful, for having an opportunity to work with him including singing a duet with him at my 50th university anniversary party .

"Dr House" will always hold a special place in my heart. As my summer/grad student supervisor, his patience for my lack of math skills was admirable, but it was his patience and willingness to coach me through some tough years that spoke volumes to who he really was. I still remember composing a version of "'Twas the night before Christmas" that centered around his Animal Science grad students, and presenting him with a handcrafted wreath, adorned with paper pigs. His laugh told us where he was in the building and his door was always open to students. He will always have a place in my heart and be fondly remembered.

So true are the words: if love had been enough... It’s the love, the laughter, the smile & for a family of intellects—the silliness! Jim didn’t fit neatly into any one category but that’s what made him such a joy. He lived full of life, laughter & kindness. Though grief will run deep; I’m hopeful all the experiences/memories will help drown it out.
