Janet Hummel

JANET HUMMEL
(née Bell)
September 20, 1968 – August 3, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Janet Hummel at the age of 56, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Janet passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 3rd, 2025, in Palliative Care at St. Boniface Hospital, with her loving family by her side. Her unwavering strength, quiet resilience, and gentle spirit will remain an enduring inspiration to all who had the privilege of witnessing her journey.
Janet is survived by her beloved husband of 35 years, Michael; her children, Kiera (Eric) Hansey, Caillin, and Braeden; her adored grandson, Wells; and her loyal dog Clover. She also leaves behind her devoted parents, Rita and William Bell; her sister Joleen (Adrian) Hawaleshka; her father-in-law, Hubert Hummel; as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws across Canada, Ireland, and the United States. Janet was predeceased by her brother, Gary, in 2009. She will also be dearly missed by her nephew, Luka, with whom she shared a very special bond.
Born in Winnipeg at the Women’s Pavilion on September 20, 1968, Janet was the eldest of three children. She was raised in Bird’s Hill and attended Bird’s Hill School, Robert Andrews, and Miles Macdonell Collegiate. Janet had a natural gift for working with children, particularly those with disabilities. She poured her compassion and dedication into her work at Mini Skool, Lubov Nursery School, respite care, and in a medical foster home. Her deep empathy and nurturing heart touched many lives.
Janet met Michael in 1987, and from that moment on, they were inseparable. They married in June 1990 and built a life full of love, laughter, and deep-rooted family values. Their love was a partnership built on friendship, loyalty, and an unwavering commitment to each other. As a dairy farmer's wife, Janet spent much of her life alongside Michael, raising their family on the farm. Together, they enjoyed spending time with family and friends, cooking, watching crime shows, and traveling to places like British Columbia and Seattle. A devoted mother, Janet spent countless hours supporting her children at hockey rinks and figure skating competitions. Winter road trips to Souris, Regina, Minot, and Fargo became treasured family traditions — not only for the games but for the friendships that blossomed along the way. Janet was always her children’s number one fan, never missing a game or competition. Her role as “Nanny” to her grandson, Wells, brought her immense joy and fulfilment.
Growing up, Janet spent summers at Spruce Sands RV Resort, a tradition she carried on with her children-where many lifelong friendships were made, and cherished memories were created. In more recent years, Ukrainian Park became her summer haven. Janet could often be found on the deck, a dog at her feet, a good book in hand, listening to her favourite CDs — including jazz, Celtic music, or her go-to station, CJOB.
Janet had a deep connection to Ireland, a place that always felt like home to her. She made several trips to visit her family, The Griswold’s— Emer, Gerry, and auntie Eileen in Northern Ireland. Janet was immensely proud of her Irish heritage, and it was a part of her that she held near and dear to her heart.
In her quiet moments, Janet found joy in life’s simple pleasures: walking the dogs, reading, and preparing delicious meals for her family. In her family’s humble opinion, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better cook than Janet — she truly knew how to work magic with garlic. She also had a special fondness for trips to Costco, always returning with something extra for those she loved.
Her warmth, laughter, patience and the kindness in her smile remained constant, even during her most difficult days. Though illness touched her body, it never touched her spirit. Janet lived with grace, humility, and an open heart, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and quiet strength that will continue to echo through her family and friends.
Janet is also remembered with affection by her beloved dogs Oscar, Darby, and Booboo, who brought her joy and companionship throughout the years.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all the medical staff who cared for Janet throughout her journey, especially the team at CancerCare Manitoba. A special note of gratitude goes to the nurses and doctors at St. Boniface Palliative Care Unit, whose exceptional care during Janet’s final days will always be remembered with deep appreciation.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 20th, 2025, at St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church, 3597 Main Street, West St. Paul.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
"Death leaves a heartache
No one can heal;
Love leaves a memory
No one can steal."
Janet’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Janet and I had a long history, through our years at Robert Andrews onto high school at Miles Mac and from then marrying into the same family and becoming sister in laws. We shared a lot of fun times over the years. As our families grew and life became more busy there would be times when we would see each other only in passing (literally waving to each other on the road) In the past few years I watched her with great admiration face a uphill battle with her health. She never felt sorry for herself and she always put her family and friends first. I will miss our lunch dates to catch up with our latest news in our lives and many laugh that we shared. Rest In Peace my dear sweet friend. My condolences go out to her entire family. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I worked with Janet at a medical foster home. She felt like an instant friend and we bonded over our connection to the UK, and our grandchildren who were just months apart. She never complained and was always smiling. Even when her struggles were definately worse than mine she always asked about me first. My condolences go out to her family and all those who loved her.

Our hearts are heavy as we grieve with you all.
Janet will be remembered so fondly and greatly missed by anyone fortunate enough to have known her. She accepted us and our whole family into her family with friendship and love, a witty sense of humor, thoughtfulness and lots of shared recipes.
She loved our son like one of her own.
She was a beautiful person and a wonderful loving Nanny to Wells, indeed "leaving behind a legacy of love"
Our deepest condolences for this loss so great, keeping you all in our hearts and thoughts.
Karen and Rod

As a childhood friend of Janet's younger sister, Joleen, I had the pleasure of spending many days in the Bell household and fond memories at their place in Spruce Sands. Not having an older myself, Janet was happy to fill the role. She always made time for us, (when I'm sure at that age we must have been frightfully annoying). I even got to attend her and Michael's wedding. I remember how truly beautiful she looked that day, beaming brightly throughout the entire occasion.
Though I moved away from Winnipeg, seeing her last year at Joleen's 50th, you wouldn't have thought the years had passed. She hugged me with such excitement and wanted to hear all about my life abroad. That was Janet, generous, kind, friendly and fun. I'm so grateful to have known her. The world was a better place with her in it.
