SUSAN JANICE HUNNIE

November 9, 1958 - January 26, 2020

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and friend. Following a brief illness, Susan Hunnie passed away on January 26, 2020 at the age of 61 years.

Susan was born in England in 1958 and blessed Jean and Ron Campbell with a second girl.  Their first child Jill now had a sister to play with. The two girls desperately wanted a brother and were delighted when Philip joined the family in 1964.

In 1967 the Campbell family moved to Canada taking up residence in Winnipeg.  In 1974 they moved to Selkirk Manitoba where Susan and Philip attended the local school.  After graduation Susan worked as an aide at the Selkirk care home.

In 1979 the family moved to Libau to enjoy the rural life. There Susan waitresses at the local gas station. Her big heart and great sense of humour made sure every customer left with a smile, even the cranky ones! One summer she decided to try her hand as a short order cook at a highway restaurant near Grand Beach.  She ran the restaurant from opening to closing. No matter how busy she was, whenever her nieces or family stopped in, she was always ready with big hug and plate of perfect chicken fingers.

Susan had a daughter Jacqui. She stopped working and moved into the farmhouse with Mom.  Susan took care of her daughter, livestock, and housekeeping while mom worked in Winnipeg each day.

In 1994 she met Leonard and fell in love. They moved a mobile home onto the farm and Susan, Len and Jacqui moved in. Although the families had separate residences, they continued to enjoy family life and regular meals together. The family grew once more when Susan and Len were blessed with a son, Shayne in 1996.

Susan was a homemaker who took pride in her garden ponds and fountains.  In the house she cared about everyone and was always ready to welcome anyone who dropped by with a cup of tea, a meal, and a warm bed if needed. She was a great organizer. She would plan family outings to Clear Lake, the Red River Ex, and family parties at the farm. Susan made sure everyone was well fed and had lots of fun enjoying the numerous activities she had prepared.

Susan was preceded in death by her father Ron Campbell; brothers-in-law Harvey Hunnie, Tony Hunnie, father-in-law Michael Hunnie; close friends Billy Moose Overrand, and Cheryl Thomas. She is survived by her husband Leonard; daughter Jacqui (Paul); sons Shayne and Mike Hunnie (Chrystal); mother Jean; mother-in-law Mabel; sister Jill; brother Philip; foster-brothers Butch (Ruth) and Gerald (Linda); grandchildren Ethan, Rachelle, and Corinna; nieces Lindsay, Ashley, and Teagan; nephew Nolan; and many more special nieces and nephews plus numerous brothers and sisters-in-law. She is also survived by whom she lovingly referred to as her, “Bonus Grandkids”, Channy, Devon, Nick, Scott, Oriana, Eric, Miguel, Riley, Danii, Chyenne, and Matt.

A memorial lunch and celebration of life will be held for family and close friends at 11:00 a.m., February 9, 2020 in the Selkirk Friendship Center, 425 Eveline Street, Selkirk, Manitoba (friends please don’t park at the Legion!).

My deepest condolences to the family. I’m sure Susan will be greatly missed. Susan was a very kind thoughtful person to me. She made a point of bringing me a lovely gift every Christmas and end of school year. She was never alone, and there were always family members with her, so her loss will be great.
