WILLIAM (SHANE) EDWARD GEORGE HUNTER

April 27, 1947 – June 22, 2025

78 Years

With deep sadness, we announce the sudden passing of William (Shane) Hunter, age 78, on June 22, 2025, in Brandon, Manitoba. Born on April 27, 1947, in Rivers, Manitoba, Shane lived a life full of purpose, passion, and deep connection to family and friends.

Left to mourn this remarkable man are his beloved wife Maureen; children Scott (Cari), Erin (Trever), Korinne, and Kirk (Hailey); grandchildren Laura, Jenna, Asia, Sydney K., Sydney H., Courtney, Kaiden, and Jesse; siblings Laurel McFarlane (Brian), Bobby, and Rocky (Mary Lou). He will also be missed by his niece Sherri and nephews Brett and Kurt. Shane also shared special bonds with dear friends, relationships that enriched his life immeasurably. He was predeceased by his parents Robert and Violet Hunter, brother-in-law Colin and by his son-in-law and great buddy Todd Bullee.

Shane spent his youth in the Rivers and Bradwardine area. He grew up with his 3 siblings and told many stories of the time he spent looking out for his younger brothers Bobby and Rocky and looking up to his big sister Laurel. He was an avid baseball player who recalled playing on the travelling team with the same group from age 10 to 18 in many tournaments, sports days and provincial championship games. He loved his mother dearly and appreciated how hard she worked to support their family after his dad passed away. He continued to miss her always.

When asked what Shane was proudest of, he said it was of his family. Family was at the heart of everything Shane did. He was first married in 1970 to Joan with whom he raised their children, Scott and Erin, sharing many meaningful years. In 1999, he married Maureen, his beloved wife and soulmate, with whom he had a deep and lasting love. Together they blended their families with care and intention, building a united family that continues to grow through marriages and the addition of eight cherished grandchildren. Shane loved it when the entire crew could all be together and he made every effort to gather his loved ones around him. He took great pride in watching his children and grandchildren grow. He played an active part in all their lives, whether cheering from the sidelines at sporting events, applauding artistic performances or offering advice, he was their biggest supporter. He especially enjoyed coaching Scott’s baseball team for many years, a role that brough him great joy. Family was everything to Shane and we were able to find comfort in that all four of his children were able to spend time with him during his final week.

Mark Twain said, “Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life,” Shane believed in and embodied that philosophy. His lifelong career in the railway industry was a source of immense pride. He started with CN Rail in Rivers right after high school in 1965 and spent more than 30 years with the Company in different roles in several places across Manitoba and the country including Montreal and Edmonton. From there, he had professional chapters with Grand Trunk Railroad in Detroit, Transport Canada in Ottawa and CEMR and Omnitrax back in Manitoba. Shane’s career spanned decades and cities and he remained deeply involved even after retirement by returning to teach and train others—sharing his knowledge with the same enthusiasm that had fueled his own journey earlier in his career.

His love for trains extended beyond the tracks into his personal life through his model railway hobby. He was passionate about railroad memorabilia and found joy in recreating the world he loved so dearly. His interest in history also led him to become the family archivist—researching genealogy and preserving stories that connected generations. He was always eager to share tales from the past, weaving together memories that kept family heritage alive. One particular piece of family trivia that he often liked to highlight was that he loved the fact that he shared his date of birth with his youngest grandson Jesse.

Shane loved to travel and embarked on many memorable vacations with family and friends. Each journey added another chapter to a life well-lived—a life defined not just by miles traveled but by moments shared. Happy Hours with his group of friends in Brandon was also something that he greatly enjoyed!

As per Shane’s wishes no funeral service will be held, but rather a celebration of life will be held for family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

As a favourite painting by Maureen in his house declares “Life’s journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally used up and worn out, shouting…. Man, what a ride!” Rest easy Shane, knowing you had one hell of a ride and were loved deeply.

Shane’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Shane lived life, large and full. With a deep, easy laugh and wit. He was clearly devoted to Maureen and family. He was generous in sharing his knowledge and experience when my son was considering a career in the railway. I an grateful to have shared some special occasions with Maureen, Shane and mutual friends. It was beautiful to watch the synchronicity of Maureen and Shane together. They shared their wisdom, wit, laughter, fun, warmth and love with those around them. Rest easy Shane. My thoughts are with Maureen and family. Love Joan

Such a bright light and a wonderful human. I love that you made Mo so happy and looked out for me when I lived in Clark Drive. You were so loving and caring when I visited with my kiddo and you'll always be remembered as 'grampa Shane'. The best holiday we ever had was with you, Mo, Todd, Korrine, Laura and Jenna. Thank you for being such a kind man.

I was only in high school one year with Shane, but he became a friend, and remained a friend. We did keep in touch from time to time. God speed, Shane.

I feel incredible sadness on learning of Bill's (Shane) passing.
I first met Bill (Shane) in the mid nineties when we were both married to other people. As couples and neighbors, we enjoyed a cruise through the Panama together and played cards on many nights. Always laughter and good times. Both of us moved on to other lives, but every once in a while connected through a text on Birthdays etc. He was a good friend and a very wonderful and caring man. My heart goes out to you Maureen and the entire Hunter family. Sincere condolences.

I met "Mr. Hunter" when he relieved my father, Jack MacLise, CN Station Agent in Erickson, Mb., for vacation in the late 60's. As a young kid, he made a big impression on me. What a great career he had and made a similar impact with countless others over his life. My condolences to the Hunter family.

I will miss our passionate political talks at the dinner table. Sharing your wisdom on history. Playing many games especially Rummikub. The fun times at the lake, happy hours and the great suppers you and Momo would make.

Todd and you will be sipping on a rusty nails above. Cheers.

Maureen,

Sending you and your family our condolences, thoughts and prayers.

So many memories flooded in as we read his beautiful life story. John respected Bill and said he was the best chief dispatcher he ever worked with!

We had good journeys and fun times both in Canada and the US and will always treasure those times. You will be in our hearts and prayers as you travel the grief journey. May you be comforted knowing he lived a live worth living and leaves a beautiful story and legacy full of unlimited memories.

With Warm Regards,

John and Monica

I have many cherished memories of my dear brother- ranging from playing ball all summer to sliding down Pilot's Hill all winter to sharing earlier times with our kids and becoming immersed in our careers. Two memories stand out ..

Bill( Shane) arriving from Edmonton to Rivers Hospital where our Mom was in palliative care. I had been there for several days.. tired, worried, overwhelmed, when suddenly I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder... it was Bill and he was there for me!

The other was a happier one, when Brian and I visited Bill ( Shane) and Maureen in Ottawa! They were always such wonderful hosts and we were treated like royalty! Such fun! Thank you for all

those memories, dear brother!

May you Rest In Peace!

Bill was one of my first bosses after I joined CN. He gave me my first chance to work in management. Bill and my father attended the same course in Gimli in 1974 to become train dispatchers. This started a life long friendship between the two. Unfortunately, I lost my father on June 11th. Bill sent me a note of condolence at that time. To the entire Hunter family I extend my deepest sympathies.

When thinking of Shane the biggest thing that comes to mind is what an amazing Grandfather he was to his 8 Grandchildren. They were lucky to have had a grandpa who was so proud of them all. Scott is heart broken on the loss of his dad and has been reminiscing with many stories of things they did together. He will be missed deeply by all that knew him. Rest east Shane.

I am very shocked to hear the news and Shayne's passing God life changes so fast with my deepest sympathies to you Maureen and your families.
