JOAN HUTCHESON

October 30, 1929 - June 11, 2023

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved mother Joan Ellen Hutcheson on June 11, 2023.

Joan is survived by her four children, James (Cheryl), Ian (Marie), Lisa (David), and Barbara (Jeff); grandchildren, Jarrett (Kelsey), Melissa (Riley), Breann (Brayden), and Lauren; great grandchildren, Brooks and Mila; brother-in- law Dr. Ian Morrow; nephews, and their families. Joan is predeceased by her husband Gordon of 67 years, and sister Doreen Morrow.

Joan grew up with Sister Doreen, Mom Edith and Dad Charles in a loving home in St. James.  Mom would lay roots in St. James for the rest of her life.

March 14, 1952 Mom married high school sweetheart Gordon Hutcheson.  They had a very active social life which led them to making life long friendships.

Mom was a member of Deer Lodge United Church.  Many monumental events occurred including her own wedding, daughters wedding, baptisms and special events.  She was member of the Church choir for over 50 years.  She had deep faith that comforted her in end of life.

Mom devoted herself to various charities (Crown Guild of Children’s Hospital), (Welcome Wagon), (Meals on Wheels).  She worked hard for many years, bookkeeping at Kings Florist.  Then at 50 years old she re-educated herself to become a Ward Clerk at the Grace Hospital until retirement.

She spent her golden years enjoying her four grandchildren.  Always willing to lend a hand when needed.  Mom was the ultimate cheerleader for her grandkids, whether it was school events, recitals, ringette, hockey games.

Her happy place was the family cottage at 2 Vine in Whytewold Beach were new friendships blossomed.

Last couple of years Mom and Dad resided at The Sturgeon Creek II.  The various activities mom was involved in landed her 3 Gold Medals at the Senior Olympics.  Mom loved the care she received from many of the staff there.  She in turn was adored by many.

Her love, strength and courage were immeasurable and will forever live on in all of us.

Celebration of life for Joan and Gordon will take place at 2pm on June 29th, 2023 at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 603 Wellington Crescent.

If you wish to donate the family has chosen the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Hazel, ( J. Frank) , Karen and I were so sorry to learn of Joan / Mrs. Hutcheson’s passing. Gordon & Joan were genuinely nice people. Our sympathies to the “Hutches”. St. James has lost two of its builders. Our family, the Johnstons grew up on Overdale St. alongside of the Hutchesons on Winchester St. and enjoyed sharing a sense of community. Gordon and Joan also had a warm historic relationship with many original St. James families such as my aunt and uncle May & Bill, and I know all that knew them cherished their relationships. Hazel frequently commented that  Joan was always upbeat and enjoyed bumping into her.  As a close friend of Ian’s I have fond memories of my contact with his Mom and Dad. I was humbled to always receive their support for my community service. RIP Mr. & Mrs. Hutcheson
