ALLAN GRANT HUTCHINSON

“HUTCH”

August 31, 1933 - October 6, 2024

Sadly, and unexpectedly, Al Hutchinson passed away after a fall during a hospital stay, on Sunday, October 6, 2024 at the age of 91.

He is loved and memories of him will be cherished by his wife of 70 years, Verna. He is also loved and will never be forgotten by sons Scott and Grant; daughter Karen and her husband Jeff Light.

He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Karen’s son Travis, his wife Katie and their daughters Annika and Bridget; Karen’s son Maxwell; and Karen’s son Benjamin and his wife Michelle; Grant’s children Tanner and Georgia; and Scott’s daughter Chelsea and her daughter McKenna.

Al had many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and cousins who also have countless wonderful memories of their years with him.

Al had a sports-loving personality, from a very young age. He had a wealth of sports knowledge filled with current facts as well as facts and stats from decades ago. He was a devoted fan of the Winnipeg Jets, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, New York Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Transcona Railers hockey team.

As a Transcona resident since the 1960s, Al volunteered in minor sports programs as a coach, referee, committee member, and most recently as a goal judge for the Transcona Railers. He continued in his goal-judging duties until he was almost 90 years old.

The list of his sports volunteering is endless. From local hockey and golf to international curling events, he made enduring friendships everywhere he went.

For many years he was actively involved in the annual Grey Owl Golf Tournament at Clear Lake, serving as a member of the Grey Owl Golf Committee, including a term as President and ultimately as an Honourary Director.

In his later years, he spent many hours working as a marshal at various golf courses.

He spent most of his working life as a Journeyman Printer in the composing room of The Winnipeg Tribune, until the day it closed in 1980. He remained great friends with many co-workers, mostly from the Sports Department.

His first love though was his family. He would get such a kick out of the stories his grandchildren shared with him about the things going on in their lives. He always wanted to be assured that everyone was doing well.

He spent many enjoyable years with Verna at their beautiful cottage north of Gimli. They made happy memories at “The Corner Hutch” with family (especially the grandchildren!) and friends.

Cremation has taken place and the family will have a private gathering to honour the life of our beloved “Hutch”.

It broke our hearts to lose you,

You did not go alone.

Part of us went with you

The day God called you home.

Al’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I was the ring bearer at Al & Verna's wedding. I think I still have PTSD from having to dance with the flower girl. Fond memories also of Xmas with all the family. Once I was old enough I often golfed with Al and my Dad. Those were good times. Rest in peace Al. Hopefully there is a golf course in heaven you & Dad can play. Our thoughts are with Verna and family.

The Grey Owl just held its 62nd annual tournament earlier this year. It was started in 1961 with the intention of making it not just a golf tournament, but an event, one where the participants looked forward to the next chance to get together.

Hutch definitely embodied that message with his passion for the tournament, and specifically for his many years as a member of the Board of Directors who managed the tournament. Al was also awarded what is now known as the Robert J. Picken Honour Award in 1988 for his commitment to the tournament.

The Board of Directors would like to take this opportunity to once again thank Al for his long-time dedication to the tournament. We would also like to offer our sincerest condolences to the Hutchinson family.

Condolences to all of " Hutch"s" family. I had the privolige to volunteer at golf Mb. tournaments with Al and had many long chats about sports with him. I missed working with him, and phoned him to ask about why he hadn't volunteered much? That's when he told me his health wasn't that good, and had to sit out a few tournies. He taught me how to be a starter for many of these tournies, for which I am very greatfull for. Thanks my friend, and I think of you often. R I P "Hutch"

Dear Verna, Karen, Grant & Scott: I'm so very sorry for your loss. I loved my uncle Al. I do have wonderful memories of our families together at family dinners. He and my dad were not only brothers but great friends. Now

they are all together once more
