JAMES “JIMMY” CHRISTOPHER IRVINE
October 8, 1971 – February 20, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James “Jimmy” C. Irvine on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at the age of 53. Jimmy’s unexpected death leaves a void in the hearts of his family and friends, a testament to the vibrant life he lived and the unwavering spirit he maintained in the face of significant challenges.
Born October 8, 1971, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Jimmy spent most of his childhood on Lansdowne Avenue in the city’s North End, attending Luxton Elementary School and St. John’s High School, where he forged lifelong friendships.
From a young age, Jimmy displayed a remarkable aptitude for building and assembling, spending countless hours constructing intricate Lego structures, meticulously reassembling action figures, and building model cars, occasionally including his younger sister in his projects. His other passion extended to the pool, where he competed with the St. John’s Aqua Kings swim club.
In his early adult years, Jimmy worked as a cook in local restaurants and alongside his father, Jim Sr., as a labourer at Direct Warehouse, skills that served him well throughout his life.
During his marriage, he was a dedicated and supportive partner, assisting with household duties and actively supporting his partner's career aspirations while helping raise her children. The family's first home became a source of pride, with Jimmy enthusiastically planning renovations and landscaping projects, creating a welcoming atmosphere filled with barbecues, bonfires, and when he could slip away - the occasional fishing trip.
At the age of 39, Jimmy suffered a severe stroke, a devastating setback that tested his resilience. However, with unwavering determination and characteristic stubbornness, aided by his father, James, and other family members who provided daily visits and support, he fought back. He relentlessly worked to regain his mobility and speech, pushing his physical limits each day. While his mobility remained limited, he continued to actively participate in yard work and household chores, inspiring all who knew him with his strength and perseverance.
Jimmy’s love for sports was legendary. A passionate and knowledgeable fan of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Winnipeg Jets, Montreal Canadiens, and Toronto Raptors, he possessed an encyclopaedic knowledge of team history, player statistics, and could engage in lively (and sometimes spirited) discussions about the game.
In later years, he developed a keen interest in current events, frequently engaging in stimulating political debates with his beloved sister, Michelle.
Beyond his passion for sports, Jimmy cherished animals, particularly dogs. Petey, Piper, Parker, and Sasha were more than pets; they were cherished companions who brought him immense joy. His days often included playful games of fetch and tug-of-war in the backyard with his canine friends.
Jimmy is survived by his mother, Carole Irvine; his father, James Irvine (and Joan); his sister, Michelle (Ronald) Kornelson; his nephews, Matthew Paris-Irvine (Melissa) and Brendan Decosse (Maya); his aunt Joan (Dale) McMullen; his aunt Barb (Ted) Drzewiecki; his US cousins Tuigg and Terra; and his good friend Jesse. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Molly and Joseph Prystanski and James and Anne Irvine.
His bond with his family was exceptionally strong, particularly with his maternal grandmother, Molly, and in later years, his sister Michelle, with whom he shared a deep connection and leaned on for advice and support, as they navigated his care and future goals.
His relationship with his mother, blossomed into a loving friendship filled with laughter and mutual support. He shared an unparalleled bond with his mother, a friendship that flourished as they lived together in his final years. Their shared home was filled with laughter, the aroma of Mom's delicious cooking, and the joy of conquering challenges they once thought insurmountable.
Jimmy had a deep sense of pride and affection for his nephews, Matthew and Brendan. He celebrated their successes but also remained genuinely concerned for their well-being. From his nephew’s childhood sporting achievements, educational accomplishments and career goals, Jimmy was their steadfast supporter, boasting of their accomplishments and always wanting updates on their adventures. A testament to his love, he carefully preserved their rookie football cards within his treasured sports card collection.
The family extends its sincere gratitude to the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service and Winnipeg Police Service for their compassion and care on Jimmy’s final day.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jimmy’s memory may be made to an animal shelter of your choice.
A private burial service will be held for immediate family. A memorial service to celebrate his life and legacy will be announced at a later date.
Those we love don’t go away;
they walk beside us every day.
Unseen, unheard,
but always near,
still loved, still missed,
and always dear.
Jimmy’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.
