MORTAL MUST I BE

I long to rise like the spray of the ocean

And blow on the breeze o'er the sea,

I long to lie on the lofty clouds

And touch the snowy mountain peaks; but

I am a mortal.

My paths are ruled by laws and bonds,

I am not free to choose

My life's path.

I am a puppet on a string

Fate is the puppeteer,

The strings are jangled to and fro

I rise and fall, rise and fall,

As Fate commands.

Why can't I lose this burdensome load,

And a freer highway find?

Why must I bear this load of mine;

That makes me stoop and pine

And will not give me rest?

Why must I be caught like a mouse in a trap;

Tortured with every move?

My fellow man, it is because

I am a mortal.

I long to rise like the spray of the ocean

And blow on the breeze o'er the sea

I long to lie on the lofty clouds

And touch the snowy mountain peaks; but

I am a mortal.

Margaret and I were friends many years ago when we were young and newly married.  When we moved up to Lynn Lake in the mid-seventies, Margaret, Katherine and friends drove up in a motor home to visit.  How nice it was to see someone from home.  Sadly, we didn't keep in touch over the years but I value the friendship that we had so long ago.  My sincerest condolences to her family and loved ones.

Margaret was a cousin, but more than that, she was a dear friend.  We visited often in our early years, I have fond memories of cheerleading with her in school.  I also  always envied her fantastic sewing and cooking skills.  Visits with her at the Maples were always too short, she had lots to say, and I was grateful for the connection she provided with the rest of the family.  She had a huge burden to bear with the MS but continued to fight other battles, like awareness for allergies.  A strong person, I will miss her!  Rest in Peace my friend.

Margaret was a treasured friend of mine for many years...Our original acquaintance was neighbours in St. James and Sturgeon  Creek United Church members. She dealt well with subsequent affiliations very well...I always enjoyed our visits at the Maples. Rest In Peace...always fondly remembered, Colleen.

I remember Margaret's many kindnesses, especially when I first moved to Winnipeg and she took me, her younger cousin, under her wing.  I admired her indomitable spirit and determination to see right done for those less able to take care of themselves.  Katherine, what a beautiful touch to include one of your Mom's poems.  I remember her keeping a book with her poems and sometimes having her read them to me.  Judy Fawcett
