MORTAL MUST I BE
I long to rise like the spray of the ocean
And blow on the breeze o'er the sea,
I long to lie on the lofty clouds
And touch the snowy mountain peaks; but
I am a mortal.
My paths are ruled by laws and bonds,
I am not free to choose
My life's path.
I am a puppet on a string
Fate is the puppeteer,
The strings are jangled to and fro
I rise and fall, rise and fall,
As Fate commands.
Why can't I lose this burdensome load,
And a freer highway find?
Why must I bear this load of mine;
That makes me stoop and pine
And will not give me rest?
Why must I be caught like a mouse in a trap;
Tortured with every move?
My fellow man, it is because
I am a mortal.
I long to rise like the spray of the ocean
And blow on the breeze o'er the sea
I long to lie on the lofty clouds
And touch the snowy mountain peaks; but
I am a mortal.
