CECELIA BEATRICE JAMES

(née PIASECKI) (STANLEY)

September 9, 1948 - September 25, 2024

On September 25, 2024, at the age of 76, our mother Cecelia passed away at Riverview Health Centre following a year-long fight with cancer. She was a mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.

In her final days, we talked about what name she wanted us to use to remember her by. In keeping with her expressed wishes, we have used Cecelia James. Although she legally used Stanley later in her life, she also chose to use James where she wanted a visible family name connection to her surviving children. It was her wish that we use James in remembering her.

Cecelia was born Cecelia Beatrice Piasecki on September 9, 1948 in Winnipeg. She was Mom to three children. Allan Rogers, her firstborn, predeceased her in 2002. She is survived by her son James James (Margaret); daughter Pamela James (Chris); and loving grandchildren.

Cecelia was a teacher, something she proudly told every doctor and nurse who asked in the last year. She finished her teaching career at Shevchenko School in Vita, MB, where she taught for over a decade until her retirement in 2012.

For years, Cecelia volunteered at the Women’s Health Clinic in Winnipeg as an unplanned pregnancy and birth control counsellor. She was passionate about this work and about helping and empowering women.

After retirement, she volunteered and was a member of the Board at Good Neighbours Active Living Centre. She was a regular presence there until she became ill in 2023.

The last year was very difficult for our Mom. She didn’t hesitate to say yes to any treatments the doctors suggested had the best odds of success. She knew it was going to be a hard road, and she endured some very difficult times. She let us know when she was ready to stop fighting, expressing great relief when she moved to palliative care at Riverview.

Mom received excellent care from the doctors, nurses, and staff at Cancer Care Manitoba, Health Sciences Centre, Pritchard Farm Medical, and Riverview Health Centre. We are grateful for all that you did for our Mom over the past year.

We will host a Celebration of Life from 4:00pm – 6:00pm on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at the Bronx Park Community Centre located at 720 Henderson Hwy, Winnipeg.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Women’s Health Clinic in Winnipeg.

Cecelia’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.
