CHARLES ROBERT (BRUCE) JAMES

March 15, 1954 – September 26, 2026

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of my beloved husband, Charles Robert Bruce James, on September 26, 2026. He was fondly known by all as “Bruce James”. He leaves behind his wife, Lani James; son Evan James; sister Carolyn James (Brian Sim); nephew Alexander Sim; niece Victoria Sim; sister-in-law Arlene Pagtakhan (David Dollar); and countless family members.

Bruce was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, on March 15, 1954, where he spent his young adult life. Through the years, they moved to different cities across Canada for his father’s job with Burns before planting their roots in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

For several years, Bruce worked part-time at New Directions, was an Educational Assistant with the Winnipeg School Division No. 1 and worked part-time as a security guard at Winnipeg Square, where we met. After a while, he figured out what he wanted to do with his life, to become a teacher. He obtained his Bachelors Degree in Education. He taught in Winnipeg School Division No. 1 at St. John’s High School as an Industrial Arts Teacher. He retired from teaching in June 2018.

His passion were his family, work family, and camping. He was a dedicated husband and father for 26 years, supportive and present throughout the highs and lows of our lives and always willing to lend a hand wherever he could. During his teaching days, he fostered leadership and team building by way of “Friday lunches,” which turned out to be life-long friendships! He found solace in nature and loved to be outdoors, whether among the trees or on the water.

We would like to thank the ICU and Palliative Care teams at St. Boniface Hospital for providing exceptional care to our beloved Bruce. Also, we would be remiss to mention all of our family and friends for all the love, prayers, and support they have bestowed upon Evan and myself during this difficult time.

A private inurnment will take place to honor Bruce.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on October 29, 2026, at 603 Wellington Crescent on Academy.

Bruce and I became friends in 1977 when he was a summer worker at Burns Meats nightshift in Winnipeg. He was achieving his first degree at New Brunswick . We have been friends ever since. He was a very good friend ,and I will miss him forever.

I have known Bruce for many years. I first met him when he completed his student-teaching practicum at DMCI.

Bruce was slow to make an impression. He was not flashy or someone who immediately drew attention to himself. However, within a few weeks, it became clear that the relationships he was developing with his students were deep and meaningful, and that his impact on them was obvious.

Later, as a teacher at St. John’s, Bruce became a valued member of the staff, serving as Department Head of the Industrial Arts Department. He was also a wonderful mentor to our Industrial Arts student teachers, always willing to share his knowledge, offer advice, and lend a helping hand.

Bruce was the kind of teacher who made a difference—not through being the loudest person in the room, but through the genuine relationships he built with students and colleagues. His quiet, steady influence left a lasting impression on many of us.
