DAVID CARL JANAWAY
February 23, 1944 – December 10, 2024
It is with heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of David Carl Janaway on December 10, 2024, at the age of 80.
Left to cherish his memory is his brother, Charlie (Marsha); his daughter-in-law, Kristine; and his two granddaughters, Victoria and Kaitlynn. Also, his nephew, Tom (Lisa), and their children, Logan, Isla, and Emilia. He will also be fondly remembered by partner, Myrna Bodnarchuk.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Roberta (Bobbi); his sons, Rodney and Travis; and his parents, Mildred and Carl Janaway.
Born on February 23, 1944, in Portage La Prairie, Dave grew up playing hockey at the Southside rink, where his love for the sport began. At 17, he left Portage to play with the Brandon Wheat Kings before continuing his career with the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux. He graduated from UND in 1967 with a degree in Business.
In the same year, Dave married Bobbi Little, in Poplar Point, Manitoba. The couple moved to Winnipeg, where they happily lived in St. James and were married for 46 years. Together they raised their sons, Travis and Rodney and passed on to them their love for sports. Dave was actively involved in coaching his sons in both hockey and baseball, and he treasured spending time with his family and friends. Later in life, he continued his passion for hockey playing for Oakville Seals and McDonald Travellers.
He was known for his witty sense of humor, enjoyed meeting new people and forming lasting friendships throughout his life. Dave was especially fortunate to have had close friends Bill Percy and Jack McDonald with whom he shared a bond of over 50 years. There are countless friendships that meant the world to Dave, everyone fortunate enough to have met him held a place in his heart.
Dave had many hobbies, including playing golf and hunting. He often spent his afternoons at Assiniboia Downs, where he made many friendships. These were meaningful to him, and he cherished the time spent there.
After the loss of his wife in 2013, Dave found companionship again with Myrna, with whom he happily shared the last years of his life.
“Our grandpa was a charismatic man who always made us smile and feel special. We will hold his stories, wisdom and view of life close and dear to our hearts. We will remember to put family first just as he did."
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at the Grace hospital. Their care and support during the toughest of days was appreciated and will be remembered.
A celebration of life will be held from 2:00pm - 5:00pm on Sunday, December 22nd at the Charleswood Legion, 6003 Roblin Blvd., Winnipeg.
David’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.
