ALFRED JOBSE

April 22, 1951 – September 3, 2021

It is with unbearable sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Alfred Jobse, the morning of Friday September 3rd, 2021, with his wife and daughters by his side. Though he was fighting incredibly hard, his cancer took him from us much too soon. Alfred is survived by his soul mate and partner Theresa Jobse, his daughter Alicia, her husband Drew and their children Keenan & Quinn, his daughter Cindy, her husband Aaron and their children Caleb & Chloe. He is also survived by his mother Christina Jobse and his brother Ruud, sister-in-law Greet and their children Irene & Jerone, (Nick and Wes) and Danielle & Hans. Alfred was predeceased by his father Jasper Jobse.

Alfred was born and raised in the Netherlands, spending most of his youth growing up in Beverwijk. In 1972 he traveled to Canada for the first time. He was here long enough to decide that he was in love with this country and wanted to stay. He returned to the “old country” and applied for permanent residence and in 1973, he returned to Canada officially and made Winnipeg his new home. He joined Manitoba Data Services as a computer operator where he met Theresa. They married in 1977 and had their 2 beautiful daughters in 1983 & 1985.

Alfred loved his family fiercely. No matter the conversation, somehow it would always come back around to his wife, daughters, or grand kids. He loved them all so very deeply and did everything he could to be involved in their lives and make sure that they were taken care of.

His love of sailing meant that when his daughters were born, their safety came first. This was the beginning of their passion for swimming. They progressed through all the levels from parent/child with him, as Mom couldn't do it as well, up to their life saving levels. Because he instilled in them this love of swimming, they took it further into competitive swimming which resulted in his involvement with the Manta Swim Club and Swim Manitoba. He used his computer skills to help run the swim meets, giving him a front row seat to watch his girls race. Swimming stayed a big part of all their lives as the family grew, with Sunday morning family swims with the kids and Grandkids.

He loved to debate people. The topic didn’t matter. Religion? Politics? Public policy? You name it and he was ready. He was informed. And these debates could go on for days. He was always the go to for information on recent world events and a wealth of knowledge and resources for anyone who asked. One of Alfred’s best qualities was his ability to listen to differing viewpoints with an open heart. There’s a good chance he would not agree with you, but he always listened.

Aside from his family, Alfred's greatest passions were photography, music, and sailing. From a young age, he knew that pictures were important, and music was in his soul. He was rarely seen without a camera in hand, Tilley hat on his head, or a grandchild by his side. You knew that you were in for a great time with Alfred if he pulled out the projector screen and slides, one of his many guitars or invited you out sailing for the day. The visual legacy of his life and his loves that he leaves behind will bring his family and friends much comfort in the years to come.

He is so loved and will be missed terribly. In lieu of flowers, the family would like you to consider a monetary donation to Cancer Care Manitoba or donating blood to Canadian Blood Services in his memory.

A private family celebration will take place on September 17th. A recording of the celebration will be made available on this page for all who wish to view it.

Alfred, je was mijn beste vriend en ik kon altijd op je terugvallen als dat nodig was. Het spijt me vreselijk, dat we al zo lang geleden het contact met elkaar verloren.

I went to camp stephens with Alicia and kelvin high school. I remember a sleepover at her house in high school and her parents being so welcoming . I am sending my deepest condolences. Losing a loved one is never easy and the last couple of years with covid seemed to make it more difficult . May your memories of him shine bright and light up even the darkest of days . With sadness we read about the passing of Alfred Jobse, and offer our condolences to his family. We met Alfred when he brought Tiny and Jasper to visit our mum Joka (Joan) Jobse Tigchelaar at our farm near Stonewall, Mb. She was overjoyed to be reunited with her cousin. We lost our mum in May 2021 but were fortunate to have family by her side unlike the tragic circumstances you encountered with Alfred. Jobses’ are a very large clan from Zeeland and two have left us in Manitoba in 2021. Our opa Jobse was one of sixteen at the turn of the last century. Again, our deepest sympathy to all his family.

Theresa, Alicia and Cindy we are sending you caring thoughts and warm hugs. Alfred’s dedication and love of family was admired. We so appreciate our time together at the pool and watching our girls turn into fine young women. Our heartfelt sympathy. Kevin & Kathy Foley (formerly with the Brandon Bluefins)

Dear family , Terry, Alicia, Cindy , husbands and ( grand) children. Herewith you all receive my condolences with the great loss of Alfred, a good man , husband , ( grand) father . I am one of the 4 Dammers sisters in NL. For me, Alfred was the brother I never had. We went together to secondary school and he became a good family friend. Almost every day he came to our house, he always gave a ring, so our mother had to open the door, she often said to him:” dear Alfred, you are part of the family, please walk in, do not ring” ….I am very happy to have met the whole family during your visit to NL. Thanks for that! Wish you all a lot of strength. Yours sincerely , Ana Dammers / Triemen

Dear family, due to the age difference with myself (one of the youngest 'Jobse' cousins) and Alfred (oldest Jobse cousin), I knew him only as 'the cousin in Canada' and maybe have met him once or twice in my life when he and Terry visited the Netherlands. But seeing the biography and the celebration of his life, I got to know him a little bit more and saw how much he meant for his family and friends. But above all that he brought a lot of love to all and that will live on in his wonderfull family! I can only add that I'd like to follow in his footsteps to try to live the way he lived his live. Love to all ❤

Our sincere condolences to you Terry, Alicia, Cindy, and families. I met Alfred at MDS. He lived close by so we went to work together. He got me interested in tropical fish and aquariums. I remember him loving music and  being very sociable; and we had great times. Thinking of you during this difficult time. Paulette et Denis Chartier

Heartfelt condolences to Terry and the family.   I have great memories of Alfred from MDS/ISM/IBM.  We also worked on our management certification together at U of M.  One of my favorite memories was one lunch hour, going to the U of  M to pick up our text books for an upcoming class.  I commented on the fact that the students at the University didn't look old enough to be there.  Alfred, deadpan, says "Christine, it just looks that way because you're getting older".  Totally cracked me up!  I loved his dry sense of humor.  The other thing he would always say if I bought a cookie or a muffin before class was "Terry can bake an entire batch for what you just paid for that cookie!".  I can't imagine the loss you must feel.

So many awesome memories to share of Alfred....Tending to his awesome gardens in the summer wearing his head bandana (he rocked the bandana). Watching through our front window seeing a couple so in love, walking hand in hand as he had his Nikon camera with him so he could take pics of the geese in the fall...I had the priviledge of being invited to his receiving his Cdn. Citizenship ceremony and he was so proud and his family right there cheering him on...So many are better people because of meeting Alfred

We met Alfred in 1974 when I joined Manitoba Data Services. From " hunting down " Xmas trees " in Sandilands with and without the wives in my ice cold van, to Alfred teaching us how to make pork sate ( fondly named  Little Alfreds - his legacy ), Terry and Alfred getting hitched, and to the many good times and drinks we all shared; it is that smiling face we will always remember. Terry and family, our sympathies, be strong, we will always have his memory in our hearts!
