CHERYL JOHNSON

(née Legros)

April 22, 1953 - March 7, 2020

Cheryl Johnson (nee Legros) passed away on March 7, 2020 with her beloved husband Wayne by her side, after a decade long battle with cancer. She is deeply missed and remembered by her three siblings, sisters- and brothers-in-law, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Cheryl was predeceased by her parents, one sibling and a nephew.

Born in Sioux Lookout, Ontario, it was the beauty of the nearby water and natural surroundings that would shape Cheryl’s love of nature and the strength of her character. These roots provided the foundation upon which she built her life when she moved to Winnipeg as a young girl with her family.

Cheryl approached life with a sensitive and straightforward nature. Family and friends meant everything to her. She was loving and loyal to those closest to her and she shared her zest for life with everyone she crossed paths with. Cheryl wore her heart on her sleeve and you always knew how she felt about you. She had a special gift and connection with children and her spirit of fun and adventure made for many happy, memorable moments throughout her life during times spent with nieces and nephews and the children of friends and neighbours.

A woman of impeccable style and taste, Cheryl personified the beauty and colour that she saw in the world around her throughout her home, garden, trailer lot at Hillside Beach and her wardrobe. Cheryl’s creativity made her a natural at crafts and cooking and she was always willing to try something new, often adding her own unique flair and flavour which made each project and recipe better than the original.

More than anything, Cheryl loved her husband Wayne. Married for 43 years and together for more than 50, they built a life that complemented each other’s strengths and shared in the many joys and hardships that life brought with great strength and resilience. Accompanying them along the way were their much-loved dogs Max and Zoe. Cheryl fought hard through many health challenges in recent years with Wayne by her side.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Cheryl’s life will be held with family and friends at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Cheryl’s memory may be made to the Assiniboine Park Conservancy. Heartfelt thanks to family members and friends who gave Cheryl so much love and support, and to the many doctors and nurses for their care and expertise.

“Wherever life plants you, bloom with grace.”

We were blessed to have had over 40 years of friendship and happy times with Wayne and Cher.  She was incredibly courageous during the last ten years with her battle but never gave up her sense of humour and amazing style and grace. We will miss you Cher.  Lots of love, Harry and Cheryl. ❤

Cheryl was so welcoming when I first met her.  It was as if we already knew each other.  Our phone calls were full of laughter and light and I will miss her.  Wayne my heart goes out to you, Heather and families.  Just remember "this thing called sorrow is the consequence of loving"

This is a message to you, Wayne. You have written a wonderful description of who Cheryl was and is RIGHT ON. The video photos are outstanding. We were next door neighbours at Hillside Beach and you were both very caring and great neighbours. Cheryl will be missed and always be remembered by us as a very caring and talented person. We hope that the memories you described about Cheryl will soften the grief you feel now and will bring you comfort and peace day by day.   Edna and Rolly Otto

Our heartfelt condolences to Wayne and the family. I will hold close the many times Cheryl made me laugh out loud, her generous heart and true zest for life; her appreciation of birds, flowers and nature; her loyalty and deep love for Wayne and her family. I will await that tap on the shoulder Cheryl, and be reminded of you every time I hear a bird sing, watch the flowers bloom, or hear a particularly raucous joke. You are loved and remembered always. Char & Rane❤
