KATHI EILEEN JOHNSON

December 21, 1950 – October 27, 2021

Kathi bravely left us at the age of 70 after a courageous battle with cancer.

She will be deeply missed, fondly remembered and always in our hearts. Kathi was born, raised and schooled in Portage la Prairie. She was married to Frank Johnson for 29 years and resided in Headingley. Together they had one daughter and many family pets. Kathi’s one true passion was horses. It started at a young age, riding horses on Sissons' farm, and only grew. She was fortunate to spend 25 years training Thoroughbreds at Assiniboia Downs where she had many personal successes. With time came change. Kathi finished her career working 15 years for the Twomey family at T & T Seeds.

Left to mourn her passing are her daughter Stephanie; son-in-law Jeff; granddaughter Lauren; siblings, Melba Morrey, Patricia Taylor, Colleen Armstrong, and Kelly Armstrong; in-laws; nieces and nephews; cousins; and close friends. KJ, we love you to the moon and back. According to Kathi’s wishes, her ashes will rest with her big bay friend Steal the Stretch.

Thank you to all the doctors, nurses and healthcare teams at CancerCare Manitoba. You gave us more time with Kathi. Your professionalism and guidance was appreciated. A very special thank you to Palliative Care, Home Care and MAiD for being an invaluable resource. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Due to on-going Covid restrictions, a private celebration of life will take place. In the meantime, Kathi’s family kindly requests that her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos and/or sharing your own memories and stories using the comment section on this page.

A lovely tribute!  I worked with Kathi at Great West Life fifty years ago and in my minds eye I can see her smiling and tossing her beautiful long blond hair. Today her face stood out in paper.  I knew it was Kathi without seeing her name.  She had a great smile and a terrific, some might say wicked sense of humour. She gave me a Manx cat once. It was the only kitten in the litter with a tail. Kathi graciously took the cat back after it ate an entire chub of baloney right out of the frying pan.  I have lovely memories of this lady and it appears Kathi continued to do what made her happiest in life.  May every memory bring a smile to your heart.

Kathi and I met through the friendship made between my daughter Carol and Stephanie, in our Headingley days. We also had horse connections. Her passion for all things equine led her to the track where she was able to live out her dreams. Kathi's sense of humour was especially noteworthy. What a special person. Such a lovely video tribute. My sincere condolences to the whole family for your loss.

We were lucky enough to have Kathi's warm and kind presence around for family gatherings, and she and her infectious laugh will be missed dearly. Her homemade preserves were always cherished.

I remember Kathi fondly as a lover of animals, a golden-haired beauty and a woman who knew how to make a joke. She was an amazing young lady who had all the things O wanted, including a beautiful horse named Prince. She shared great sisterly love her whole life. Cousin Dorothy

If I had only one word to describe Kathi, it would be “radiance”.  she was the epitome of kindness and grace, sprinkled with a hearty dash of blistering humour.  She will be so missed by the multitudes of people who adored her.  In her honour, we are making a donation to the Therapeutic Riding Association here in Thunder Bay.  RIP beautiful Kathi..you were a star! ❤️
