MARY KATHLEEN JOHNSTON

(née HOOPER)

January 28, 1969 - February 10, 2023

It is with deep emotion that we announce the passing of our mother, Mary Kathleen Johnston, on February 10, 2023, at the age of 54.

Surviving Kathy are her children, James, Christopher (Lyryk), Scott (Donna), Roseanna and Paige (Joel); as well as her grandchildren, Nevaeh, Thane, and Renee. Also mourning her passing are her sisters, Frances Ross and Joyce Hooper; father of her children, James Johnston Sr; as well as many other relatives and friends, both near and far. Kathy was predeceased by her son Gregg Johnston; parents Mary and James Hooper; brother James (Jim) Hooper; and brother-in-law Glen Ross.

Kathy was born on January 28, 1969, at the old Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Kathy was the only Canadian-born child of Mary and James Hooper; the rest of her family having emigrated from Glasgow, Scotland. Although she was a true Canadian, she enjoyed her Scottish heritage.

Kathy attended Neil Campbell School, Munroe Junior High School, Miles Macdonell Collegiate, as well as Winnipeg Adult Education Centre. She was extremely proud of her lifetime accomplishments, including completing her grade 12 and her position working for Manitoba Justice. Above all else, she cherished her children, grandchildren, and her dogs.

Kathy had a very happy childhood, filled with love and affection from her parents and older siblings. She was a very strong willed and outspoken person. She always wanted the best for her children, to make sure that they could have the same kind of childhood that she had.

In 2012, Kathy suffered a terrible stroke. Thanks to her perseverance, and the efforts of the staff at the Health Science and Riverview Health Centres, she pulled though and regained her independence. In the years that followed, her health continued to decline, causing her to spend time in and out of the hospital. Her family is grateful for the patience, care, and compassion of all the healthcare workers that helped her during her final years.

Kathy’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page. A celebration of her life was held at 1:00 PM Saturday, March 18, 2023 at 603 Wellington Crescent, (Unitarian Facility).

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Manitoba Heart & Stroke Foundation, or an animal rescue of your choice.

Kathy’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

It’s been a year since Kathy’s passing and I have just now been able to watch the videos of her memorial.  😓 Kathy had a big heart and I was lucky to have been the recipient of  her unconditional love. She loved visiting the BC coast and was determined to dip her toes in the ocean even though it meant a long arduous trek to the bottom of a winding path.  I miss her so much James G❤

I am terribly sorry for the family’s loss as Kathy was the most caring person!  She cane up on my fb memories today and I looked to see how she was doing to only see that she had recently passed.  Kathy treated me so well at the Law courts when I was there during my pregnancy and was always concerned about my fetal assessments to make sure my baby was doing good.  She came up on my fb memories 3 years ago today for congratulating me on motherhood and I was soo heart broken to see this sad news!  She loved her family so much and spoke so highly of her children and grandchildren.  She treated me so well and I only knew her a short while.  May she be with her son and rest in peace without pain ❤

My heart is so broken... the last couple of years we hadn't seen you much because of Covid. I am in such shock. I will so miss your mischievous and cheery smile. Every memory I have with you... was always full of fun and laughter. I know these last 10 years have not been kind to you, but you never let it bring you down. You stood tall with the grace and held your head high. My friend I will miss you... keep an eye out on all of us and Rest easy. To Kathy's family please know we all share your grief and pray that the memories bring you much comfort.

I met Kathy almost 10 years ago. She was always a great person to hang out with and talk with. I remember coming to her house to have drinks and chat around the bonfire. It’s an evening I’ll never forget. Rip my dear friend!! ❤

I met Kathy through my work with Justice over the years. She had a massive and kind heart and was in fact there for me on one of my worst days. I will never forget her or her spirit.
