PERNELL JOHNSTON

February 20, 1964 - December 12, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, uncle, brother-in-law, nephew, cousin and friend, Pernell Johnston (PJ).

Pernell was predeceased by his mother Terry; his father Wendell: his sister Kim; his stepfather Marcel; father and mother-in-law Gordon and Joan Masters; brother-in-law Roger Thibault; and sister -in-law Cathy Masters. Left behind to cherish his memory is wife Sandie Masters; daughter Taelan and partner Mike; Tae’s mom Cara Grapentine; special Auntie and Uncle Sharon and Dennis; nephew Vincent and niece Ashley and partner Gary; and in-laws Debbie Thibault, Bruce Masters, Kim and Rick Girden, Curtis and Christina Masters as well as many aunts and uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces.

Pernell was born on February 20, 1964 and grew up in the close-knit community of Riverview and Lord Roberts where he made many wonderful, lifelong friends. These past three years, he returned to live in Riverview, where he could often be found walking his pals Tucker and Ruby, who miss him terribly.

Pernell will be remembered dearly as a talented athlete; in his early years he excelled at football, soccer and hockey and in his last few years he kept active through involvement in golf and curling. His love for sport, and his desire to see young people thrive, led him to a teaching and coaching career. He was always so proud to be a Churchill Bull Dog, both as a member of the city championship football team in 1980, as well as his coaching days! Perhaps his proudest and most enjoyable coaching memories were his years coaching Tae and her friends in soccer.

He was a talented and devoted teacher, sharing his love for construction and art through his many years of teaching Industrial Arts. His summers were often spent working in crop insurance, travelling across western Canada. He developed many strong and deep relationships throughout his life and is remembered as a man with a wonderful sense of humour, a warm heart, a listening ear, and the capacity to love deeply and selflessly. In the last decade of his life, he became a follower of Christ and found wonderful mentorship from members of The Church of the Rock and Oasis Church. It is with this deep hope in heaven that we let him go to an address that is more wonderful than any in Riverview!

"What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch. We may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget" --Author Unknown

A Celebration of Life for Pernell is planned for Wednesday, April 26 at 1:00PM at the Pinnacle Club located at IG Field, 315 Chancellor Matheson Road. The entrance for the Pinnacle Club is located at the east side of the stadium. All are welcome.

Only got to know him the past few years through golf. Just a great guy. Fun to be around. Not going to be the same without him.

We are so sorry to hear of Pernells passing. We have so many great memories of fun times together with the kids growing up. Pernell and Guido coached Tae and Amy and the girls in many rewarding soccer seasons. Our condolences to Sandi, Tae, Cara and families. He will be missed ❤️

Sad to hear the news of the passing of my friend Pernell. We had some good fun on the field and dangerously too much fun off. He was a natural leader in sports and in life. We didn’t keep in close touch in the years after high school, but on the occasions when we would meet, it was quickly like old times. Thoughts to loved ones. He will be missed. Rest in peace QB
