ALFRED GEORGE KANDERA

May 19, 1929 - September 23, 2022

With heavy hearts, we announce that Fred passed away on September 23, 2022 at Meadowood Manor at the age of 93 years.

He was predeceased by his wife, Sylvia and daughter, Yvonne, both in 2016, and his sister, Hilde in 2020.  He is survived by his daughters Michelle, Sonia (Amir); and his grandchildren Ryan (Tasha), Colin, Samantha (Joel) and Emily (Thomas).

Fred spent his youth in Austria and married the love of his life, Sylvia, in 1955.  They came to Canada in 1957 and eventually settled in St. Norbert, where they raised their three daughters. His field of specialty was electrical engineering and drafting. Over the years, he added many courses and roles to his resume, including becoming the President of the St. Norbert Community Club, attending Toastmasters, becoming a realtor and teaching a Real Estate Course.  But Fred’s true passions were cycling, travelling, mountains, nature, canoeing, xc skiing and hiking.  He returned to Europe several times over the decades to visit family and friends. In Canada, he completed many cycling trips. One dream was to cycle across Canada, but that never came to fruition, unfortunately, however he was still able to cycle until he was 89.  He also loved spending time in his workshop tinkering, building things and creating useful gadgets for the house.

Fred and Sylvia had a joyful 62-year marriage full of laughter, adventure and lots of family time. After Yvonne and Sylvia passed away in 2016, life changed for Fred. His health declined rapidly but he was still able to enjoy several pleasant years at Seine River Retirement Residence, before he moved to Meadowood Manor for his final year of life. Despite his numerous health challenges and the loss of Sylvia, we saw his strength and resilience every single day in the way he faced life. We would like to thank all the lovely staff at both those residences for the patient and wonderful care they gave him in his final years, and days.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place.  A graveside ceremony will be on Friday, September 30 at 1:00 PM at the Fort Garry R.C. Cemetery, 826 Crescent Drive.  A reception will follow.

Fred's family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

My dad always arranged anniversary gatherings and I feel privileged to have been a very small part of his school friends. I am so very sorry for your loss.  Love to you all from Evi Short (Renoldner) xxx

Michelle, Sonia and family. Although this is still a sad time for all of you we would like to share some of our memories that we continue to cherish about your Father, our friend Fred. The first time I met him was at Royal Trust and his gentle manner, laughter and smile has stuck with me all these years. In short order we became friends. A special and humorous time I recall was out at a park with his beloved family. We attempted to follow you girls down the circular slide and he got stuck at the curve. I still hear his laughter in my mind all these years later. There were other memorable times besides this one which will live on in my mind. Fred you will be missed but Not forgotten. Sonia, Amir, Michelle and family, Offering sincere condolences for your loss. I’ve been fortunate enough to know your dad and enjoyed many chats with him over the years. Of course his favourite conversation topic was his children and grandchildren. He was clearly so proud of you all, and the stories you share of him when you are together will ensure he will remain in your hearts forever. Thoughts and hugs to you all. -Holly
